And like, I'm AMAB. A relatively small AMAB but I went through normal male puberty and still ended up with wrists small enough that most "Men's" watches look ridiculously large on me. This just happens and a lot of thin and/or smaller men come in looking for watches. They'd totally benefit from being open to trying women's watches but they refuse to even look at them just because of the label. Similarly there are some really cool men's watch designs that are relatively small and could fit many women but they also refuse to try on these watches because they feel they're not for them.. it's sad.

@njion Either kind would surely be more gender-affirming when recommended by a knowledgeable enby. This reminds me of a glasses salesperson making their work needlessly harder by looking for ones for me in only the less fitting half of the inventory.

@njion When i figured out my sexuality it was like this unlocked for me. Before that i would try to conform to what a heterosexual man was "supposed" to be. Then i realised, "hang on, i'm not one. i can just do what i want". And this unlocked stuff like browsing through the "women's" shirts section at the second hand store. They are so light and comfortable and have pretty pattern with flowers and stuff while "men's" shirts mostly have graph paper patterns in boring colors.

@njion but what if I want to wear a watch that's absurdly out of proportion to my wrist?

@njion what you're saying is, they want their accessories to affirm their gender :>

@njion i feel that with sneakers, brands often decide that a certain color of a specific model is women's, which means it gains limited sizing there is nothing inherently feminine about it, it's a damn shoe, yet they forbid people with large feet from enjoying the damn thing

@njion That's a long battle, against stereotypes - not just about gender, think as an example if I'm "too old" to wear clothes for youngsters, and even the counter (which has haunted my youth, and I played on that). I wish we could win it, but the sense for groups and subdivisions is anthropologically radicated in the human species. Anyway I'll keep buying bigger watches, not because they make me manly, but because I'm so damn nearsighted 🤓

@njion there's this psychology in a lot of normal people where it makes them irrationally upset to have their accepted basis of reality challenged, and i think that's why a lot of them struggle with gender freedom. heteronormative gender norms are incredibly limiting to them, but they're also a cornerstone of their accepted reality, a root node on the decision tree of whether something is proper or improper to do. some people feel liberated when they find out they don't have to live that way, while others seem to really hang on to those norms, like they wouldn't know how to perceive reality without them. strange human behavior

@njion I agree, it's really dumb. There is no reason why things like watches or clothing should be gendered. All clothing is ultimately unisex.

@njion Back around 2016 I was at an optometrist choosing frames for my glasses. I found some small rectangular frames I liked. The clerk told me the frames I had chosen were for women and recommended a pair she said were for men and I really didn't have the energy to have the gendered objects fight with her at the time so I went along with it and bought the ones she was recommending Got home and realized these "men's" frames were covered in floral patterns lol I mean men can rock flowers but if I were trying to enforce gendered norms on objects, swapping the angular plain pewter for the rounded floral engravings wouldn't have been the move Still would have preferred the angular little frames I choose originally but I was quite happy to wear the floral frames and laugh about the failed attempt to enforce gender

@njion I’m still fuming that the ONLY watch in the original MoonSwatch series that DOESN’T have a strap size option larger than medium is the pink Venus watch, because it’s a “women’s” watch. Like, Swatch just didn’t manufacture a large strap for it because “men won’t wear it and women have small wrists”. So I have to have the white Moon strap in order to wear it. Honestly kinda detracted from the point of owning the watch for me. First world problem, obviously, but it does really annoy me.

@njion@bark.lgbt There are many languages that gender literally everything, so I am not surprised.

@njion@bark.lgbt I think when I still identified as male, the start of breaking that down was how blatant the marketing towards men is, especially with bath products! I got fed up with the 321463-in-1 shampoo, conditioner, body wash, car wash, toothpaste, stove cleaner, carpet cleaner, laundry detergent, dish detergent... And then I read, from another man, about how "men's shampoo," if it isn't the exact same as "women's," it's inferior. They just sell men worse shit and mark it up. And it was all over after that. I stopped caring who it was meant for and started caring if it matched my vibe. Certainly made it pretty easy to slide into being enby when I came to that conclusion.
