@mattiem@mastodon.social I was planning to open a bug report about how the Gulf of Mexico was incorrectly named in Maps, but what you're suggesting here is different sort of protest. ✊

@mattiem@mastodon.social Courageous, bold, appropriate. Hope it works and I'm with you 99%: I still think I owe my users to test GC with the upcoming macOS betas, since every year something breaks. But I'll restrain from filing Feedbacks and installing the other betas. Hopefully some manager won't turn the reduced number of FBs as proof quality is improved.

@mattiem@mastodon.social 👏 sad but that is needed unfortunately. Tim Cook is destroying any joy or desire I have to work in Apple platform. WWDC is dead for me.

@mattiem@mastodon.social We ditched Apple. We don't develop anything for them as standard. If it works on their phones and laptops, great, if not, tough. The dev team couldn't be happier.

@mattiem@mastodon.social @bigzaphod@mastodon.social This was attempted by @lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social some time ago, it didn't succeed much if I understood well (I did it too on my side, but well…). Anyway, I can do it again on my side - thank you for trying something, at least. Not sure what I can do either, as a mac developer, on my side, except that.

@mattiem@mastodon.social @nerius@mastodon.online shouldn’t swift, as an open source initiative, be isolated from this? Or am I being too naive? Thanks for the post. You mentioned Swift still uses X. Is that transitive via Apple’s ads or somethung else?

@mattiem@mastodon.social I believe we should all reach out to friends and other devs and organize something. https://christiantietze.de/posts/2025/02/leverage-to-influence-apple/ Set up a chat real quick somewhere, whip up a complaint. Sign it. Spread, share, make more people protest in concert so that we don't feel alone.

@mattiem@mastodon.social I have no backup platform. I loath web work. Nonetheless I will no longer be using Apple betas, nor provide any feedback. This is my contribution small as it is.

@mattiem@mastodon.social Count me in! I’ve also been contemplating whether I should even renew my paid developer account when it comes up in April, I pretty much just have it to notarize my tiny open source projects.

@mattiem@mastodon.social I applaud your sentiment and yet I think it’s little more than unfruitful activism, only calming the own mind a bit: AAPL simply won’t notice, let alone care. Real change comes from the power of the masses, in my opinion. I‘d love to join some sort of union lead by ‚big‘ and thus impactful Apple platform developers! Heck, even an open letter by people like @cabel@social.panic.com @marcoarment@mastodon.social etc. would be a start that could cause an avalanche – just like your blog post, but bigger!

@mattiem@mastodon.social This has been on my mind as well. I was on the verge of getting a Vision Pro for development but have put that on hold indefinitely, and I always get the latest MacBook Air for my work but I'm disinclined to do so when the new M4 one comes out. Apple is noted for maintaining their DEI initiatives (so far), so there's that. But going back to Xitter is a hard thing to take.

@mattiem@mastodon.social Anything is better than nothing, but the size differential is tremendous, and apple has a long and storied history of disregarding their external developers. If you really want to make them feel it - port your software to another OS, don't put it in the apple mac app store, or get it into the alt stores on ios. Stop using apple proprietary software and APIs. Stop letting them profit off your labor. Apple needs to realize that their success rests on the happiness and goodwill of both their devs and users, and we're deeply unhappy right now. As a user - I've decided on a moratorium. No new apple hardware or software. At all. The only money they're getting is applecare subs, and that's on thin ice. As my hardware ages away from usability - I'll swap to linux. It's not as good - but the baggage is less weighty. The hope is they "wake up" before I get too comfortable elsewhere. We'll see. (I did the same long ago with microsoft and meta and twitter and the rest of the gang of idiots. Hasn't helped. Needs critical mass.)

@mattiem@mastodon.social the question is is Google or Android any better? They actively support the Israeli military and Im sure the current admin as well. I agree with your sentiment, but just saying I think all major players are probably culpable.

@mattiem@mastodon.social Thanks for bringing this up! We Ukrainians are no strangers to boycotting global orgs that engage in pro-authoritarian (mostly pro-Russian) activities. I think it's important to have a simple and concrete list of activities you want stopped, for example "Apple must leave X". Otherwise, the position risks becoming a moot point.

. @mattiem@mastodon.social you could always (as I have done) file bug reports citing that the CEO of Apple is aiding and abetting fascism.

@mattiem@mastodon.social – "Apple is supporting a regime that is not just destroying democracy in the United States, but is actively working to do so globally. Not to mention attacking my own country of Canada." What specific things do you see happening that amount to this? Presumably it's more than one name on a map…?
