This is some headline. "Films more likely to star an actor called Chris or a talking animal than a woman over 60, study finds." #ageism #misogyny https://www.theguardian.com/film/2026/may/25/films-more-likely-to-star-an-actor-called-chris-or-a-talking-animal-than-a-woman-over-60-study-finds?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot I mean to be fair, basically all films since the silent era star talking animals.

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot @Nickiquote@mstdn.social One could argue that this says as much about statistics and journalism as it does about Hollywood casting

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot Of course with Evans, Hemsworth, Pine and Pratt making it big Christopher is currently having a good innings. but there's also a long tail of other Christophers like Lee, Lloyd and Plummer. And more. It's a good name. [Of course this doesn't affect the point being made. However successful Christopher are.]

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot Now they need to discuss MC representation in novels. Hoo Boy!

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot One of my next novel concepts is a retired duo of lady crooks. If I weren’t already into the second draft of my current thing, I’d start on it now. It’s such a fun idea.

  • @patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot Speaking as a woman over 60, we are so hated they make us invisible in every form of media they can. We are usually no longer considered attractive under the male gaze/patriarchy. And since we are not attractive or good to look at, they'd prefer we just disappear. I used to get sexual harassment constantly in public. Now I get men treating me viciously. Their contempt and hatred is not masked. It is obvious and blatant. Under the patriarchy older women have no value and the trappings and outlets of all of society make it extremely clear.

@patrickhadfield@mastodon.scot Now, if they could just make a film starring a talking animal voiced by Christina Pickles…
