It is 2000. I'm 18 years old. They say my job won't survive quantum computing (IBM is really close). It is 2005. I'm 23 years old. They say my job won't survive visual IDEs. It is 2010. I'm 28 years old. They say my job won't survive smartphones. It is 2015. I'm 33 years old. They say my job won't survive web3. It is 2020. I'm 38 years old. They say my job won't survive AI. It is 2025. I'm 43 years old. They say my job won't survive quantum computing.

  • My job will eventually disappear, as many other jobs have in the past and will in the future. Or it will be transformed into something different. It didn't exist as it is right now when I was born, and it may not exist when I retire (hopefully after). Maybe the person I talked when I was 18 was a visionary and correct (just off by a few decades). I'm glad I didn't listen.

  • @alvaromontoro@front-end.social Why would a programmer's job not survive quantum computing? Quantum computers are computers. Somebody still has to write code for them to execute. Also, I haven't heard about very many exciting applications of quantum computers. Mostly just breaking encryption. I'm sure that's very exciting for cybercriminals, but nobody's going to want a quantum computer in their house just for that.

@alvaromontoro@front-end.social @bhawthorne@infosec.exchange I can't think of *anybody’s* job offhand that would be eliminated by the rise of quantum computing. (Unless your job is exclusively artisanal large integer factoring)

@alvaromontoro@front-end.social Ha, I'm much older and I remember 1980s "3rd gen" tools that was glorified program generators that was going to make us all unemployed. I work on AI and with AI and I'm not worried about my employment at all, but I'm worried about the very real brain rot I see around me.

@alvaromontoro@front-end.social I'm almost seventy. When I was at school, fifty five plus years ago, we were told by a careers teacher not to go into software development, because within five years (i.e. by 1975), computers would be smart enough to program themselves. Uhhhmmm... no. I do think that, if technological civilisation does not collapse first, we will ultimately create artificial general intelligence; but I won't see it in my lifetime and I don't think you will in yours.

It's 1994, I'm 10 years old. They say I'll have to choose a job some time in the future and I should choose carefully, because some jobs will be gone sooner than later. Prime example is coal miners who everyone agrees will are clearly on their way out of germany. It's 2002. I'm 18 years old and decided on doing this IT stuff. There was a bubble that just burst, but everyone is clear about this still being a job of the future… not like those coal miners that should have all moved into renaturation projects a while ago? It's 2014. I'm 30 years old. All that web stuff is dead and clearly mobile is the next big thing. I don't even know if there's still coal mines somewhere? It's 2024. I'm 40 years old. "Every thinking-job will be gone soon due to AI! Driving Taxi, Call-Centers or flying airplanes will be gone too! You might have luck if you're doing something manual with people?". I'm still doing exactly the same IT bullshit. But with ever increasing rates of bullshit and boilerplate. We get done less and less every year. …meanwhile there's public outcry about the recent (and expected/anual) extension of some large coal mines.

  • @alvaromontoro@front-end.social It is 1948, and my late father is 10 years old. #Nazi emigrant to #Argentina , Ronald Richter convinced #fascist #dictator Juan Péron that #Fusion energy was possible from hand-held devices. The Huemul Project is funded, and 3 years later dubious claims of success spurred the #UnitedStates government to start the gravy train at the #Princeton Plasma #Physics Laboratory. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Huemul_Project

  • @alvaromontoro@front-end.social I'm not saying you will lose your job to AI you probably won't, but it is a very powerful tool when it is understood and used as such - the hype is not based on that, it revolves around fantasy and that is where the real danger lies - misplaced trust in machines that appear to think, but actually just generate patterns and nothing else.
