Oh gah I really need to keep up with the CSS Joy applicants... Sorry to anyone who is waiting on me! To everyone else, enjoy a browse: https://cs.sjoy.lol (If you come across a broken site, or one with missing or unfindable webring links, let me know. I do occasionally do the round myself but don't always find the time!) #CSS #webrings

I like this a lot! https://youtu.be/9NGa5mz5cp0?si=sbrtfnEkt7XZVZYX An ebike without a battery - but super-capacitors. Charges on easy flats and downhills, then will have enough to help you up the hills when you need it. It might still not be enough for say, Bristol or a town in the Alps, especially if you need to go uphill immediately from home - but for lots of cities this would get people over the humps of "I want to cycle but oh no but hills, but sweaty, but battery charging/explodin...

Got an issue where a custom emoji from a font file isn't working in Firefox on MacOS, but we're not even seeing the normal OS emoji as fallback. Any ideas?

Recently renewed my subscription to Fastmail and realised I can offer 10% off the first year to other people (ofc if you sign up I get a little kickback too, full disclosure etc.) https://join.fastmail.com/5a7bc1e2 If you're trying to escape GMail, and you heard some problematic news about Proton - try @fastmail@mastodon.social :)

GoFundMe.com has been driving me up the wall. I must have donated as a guest, but to unsubscribe from a campaign's further pleading emails, you have to have an account to be able to change notification preferences. I refuse to become more deeply connected to a system only to extricate myself from it. It took a lot of scouting around the website to find a privacy center where I could submit my email and ask to be deleted. At least next time I donate via GoFundMe, I'll know how...

"I’m not the only one. Personal sites are coming back. RSS feeds are coming back. Webrings are coming back. People are remembering that a website can be a home or a place instead of a profile." https://www.terrygodier.com/the-boring-internet Yessss @tg - this echoes what I've been thinking lately, but put in much more depth and eloquence than I could have managed.

I spent too long, and burned through a lot of tokens today, giving Claude a chance to find a weird issue that I wasn't sure whether it was CSS or library-based. It went deep, checking through the node modules of a library trying to find any little differences which might explain the issue I was having. It suggested I rewrite some of the components with things it found which were prepended with UNSAFE_ and UNSTABLE_. It even invented a "known issue"! When I asked for...

I came up with the term "inclusive front" to mean the band of people who care about the web's inclusivity. It's a play on words; we largely work on the front end, but I feel we're also like a political 'popular front' (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Popular_front) against a poorly built web that excludes people. I will not gatekeep this term, so if you feel like you want to take it on, go ahead! Even if you're a backend person, o...

I think, once you know what/who is over, American towns and cities could start laying Stolpersteine: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stolperstein They are subtle, but I think they work. My children asked me what they mean. In an age appropriate way, I started trying to explain what happens when really bad people get into power. They already know there are some bad, powerful people doing awful things in the world right now. Harder is explaining how these people get into power in the first plac...

Huh, a recent Chrome update seems to have brought a bunch of focus rings back into my company's app. I am not against them obviously! We have styles on :focus-visible. But there's some lingering Bootstrap stuff going on in our various layers, and it's bringing a differently/more default styled focus ring back on things clicked on by a mouse. Is that familiar to anyone else?

I listened to this while deep cleaning my bathroom today (rock and roll), and found myself wanting to thank @brucelawson for doing what he does. https://youtu.be/OWDvt85qJNQ Thank you for your charisma (I mean this without sarcasm) and your willingness to spend time talking to stiff-suited policy wonks until they understand why the web is so important to us and is not to be carved up and sold off. From this silly goose, thank you for stealing back our commons.

Just realised that on Mastodon, boosting *is* the algorithm. There's no code trying to cleverly show me stuff it reckons I'd be into, based on what my contacts are into, instead my contacts are saying "I like this, I bet my contacts would like it too" and that is way smarter than any algorithm. Thank you, boosters!

Does anyone have good tips for getting archived messages from Postorius/Hyperkitty/Mailman via an API? The docs aren't helping me at all, I keep going round in circles. Maybe I keep missing the relevant page. I don't want to set the thing up, I want to be able to fetch posts from an existing setup, and ideally serve them up elsewhere, i.e. via @astro collections. Thank you in advance!
