@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe I had one of those splitters floating around through multiple cross country moves and finally gave it away a couple of years ago to someone who was desperate for one the night before starting a road trip with her small children*. I guess they are no longer super common, despite still being incredibly useful. *she had one portable DVD player and two sets of wired head phones and zero desire to listen to the same kids movie over and over while she drove, she was very emphatic about that

@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe The worst part: it's actually possible, a lot of headphones allow it... But only using some weird proprietary extension, only from the official app(*), and only among devices within the same manufacturer(**). It's as if you needed to buy one of those 80s' splitter for each separate brand of wired headphones. 🤮 (*): kudos to Logitech to allow this with only buttons presses, no app required. (**): am sure some noname on AliExpress forgot to put limitations and might cross pair.

@glassresistor@sfba.social Oooh, you're right, I see that multi-stream audio was added to the Bluetooth LE standard in the Bluetooth 5.3 spec. finally https://www.bluetooth.com/learn-about-bluetooth/feature-enhancements/le-audio/ This appears to be part of the auracast protocol someone else mentioned in the replies here. https://www.bluetooth.com/auracast/ (I used to attend Bluetooth SIG meetings, but it's been a little while to be honest.) @dryak@mstdn.science @pine64@social.treehouse.systems

@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe the formal way to achieve that was ratified for BT5.x, its labelled as Auracast, which supports broadcast to multiple BT listeners. It was originally proposed for larger auditorium like uses (ie. imagine a concert alternative to closed-loop systems), but as the tech is part of the current BT 5.x stacks, it can be used down into multiple headsets for phones, simulcast for TVs, broadcast guides in museums, etc. It utilises BT low energy (LE) for efficiency.

@HauntedOwlbear@eldritch.cafe I think about this constantly while watching tv. My father in law would like to use his AirPods when watching, but then none of us could hear. Or, my wife and I could use ours while the kids are sleeping. Nope. It’s either single-user, or out loud.
