@yosh@toot.yosh.is This is why modern supply chain is shit, everything is set up to be delivered just-in-time and it works fine except when there’s a new pandemic or a boat stuck somewhere or a war or… yeah generally I think modern society is obsessed with short-term efficiency instead of long-term reliability.

@yosh@toot.yosh.is the same goes for the people as well. If there’s no slack then you get stress when people are off sick, burnout because you’re constantly up against delivery schedules, and bad decision making because you’re tired and/or rushed.

@yosh@toot.yosh.is there's an excellent example of this in the train world in Belgium. in the first half of the 20th century, when trains were still in vogue among the rich, a huge chunk of Brussels was torn down to create a train station right in the middle of the city and connect the two peripheral stations directly. this north-south connection still exists and something like half of *all trains* in the country pass over it (it's one of the busiest stretches of rail in the world!). it is also impossible to expand and thus always at maximum capacity. any mishap immediately causes cascading delays across the entire country.
