@petrabrandstrom@mastodon.art Oddly, the first thing I thought of was “fairy tales”. The bright young warrior in the foreground to me looks like the modern day rendition of fairy tales as encouraging and inspiring stories for children. The dark grim looming monsters, on the other hand, make me think of the much darker folktales that were the original fairy tales. An inspired child of the present ready to take on the looming monsters of the past.

@petrabrandstrom Sometimes children see the monsters we adults do not. Also, sometimes what seem like monsters now is actually preparation for what comes next.

@petrabrandstrom@mastodon.art I love it. The childhood love of being a hero mixed with a resolute stance that only young children have. Nobody is more fiercely determined than a child. The shadow is nothing - the child doesn't recognize it as an adult would, doesn't feel it the way an adult does because she hasn't felt the full weight of the world and the true darkness. It is a mere obstacle, and she is there to remove it.

@petrabrandstrom@mastodon.art Such a powerful contrast. The monsters a child's imagination can conjure. I immediately thought of John Bauer's Ut i vida världen, probably because it's like the polar opposite of this, so light-filled and spacious. Another difference: here we have the idea of play, whereas Bauer’s subject is a fairytale, and the horse and the sword are real. But wait a minute – is that a little trail of blood we see in the corner, by the wooden sword. Hmm…

Sword to fight of the great evil coming for us, a wrench fixing my imaginative machine, staff of a dirigent that directs the music of my fantasy. This is what this picture brings back The untainted fantasy of my childhood
