@neauoire@merveilles.town I remember that this intrigued my also about Haiku back then. So much possibilities. =)

@neauoire@merveilles.town I dunno, nearly half-a-million hours for potato salad... I just want something quick.

@neauoire@merveilles.town wait a minute... does this mean that the filesystem+file browser is kind of a... spreadsheet app...?

@neauoire@merveilles.town He never explained fully what is tbdfs on his videos. After #iwp9 I finally got it. It's a really cool idea.

@neauoire@merveilles.town when we used BeOS it was in college and the various instant messengers were still in vogue. there was something called IMKit, which used a Tracker window with a query on your contacts as your buddy list, and the backend component signed in and maintained the metadata on those. it was really quite something.

@neauoire@merveilles.town Wow, is this an actual working version of the mythical database filesystem? I just remember MS eating shit chasing that dream...

@neauoire@merveilles.town an idea i wished to see for years, the file system/manager can replace a lot of applications.

@neauoire@merveilles.town #BeOS was decades ahead of its time, irrespective of its incipient and temporary shortcomings, then. I have yet to see any - ANY - OS that has the equivalent WOW factor, ever since. Nothing, absolutely nothing comes even close. Haiku is a poor would-be attempt. Nice, but... eh.

@neauoire@merveilles.town Most modern filesystems support arbitrary metadata. MacOS uses it for labels and internal flags like “this file was downloaded from the Internet”. But Be was the only one that really ran with it as a user-facing tool.

@neauoire@merveilles.town #BeOS' metadata chops were legendary. Other OSes still haven't caught up.

@neauoire@merveilles.town it's super nice, the email client out of the box is Tracker + an application to compose mail. Unfortunately there aren't many applications that agree on the metadata of e.g. Contacts or that store things as files at all

@neauoire@merveilles.town beOS is SO sick, really enjoyed playing with it a while back, such good ideas

@neauoire@merveilles.town I have wanted to like this concept for years, but I keep worrying that it's not as useful as it first seems. For example, Windows has done contacts like this since Vista, but nobody ever seemed to use it - to the extent that when Microsoft added a separate contacts app in Windows 8(?) they never added a way to import from the old file format. But if you do build it for yourself, please share the results! I am curious to know how well it works.

@neauoire@merveilles.town Not sure if you've seen this: a book about the BeOS filesystem by an author of same. (Now free) https://www.nobius.org/dbg/practical-file-system-design.pdf As I understand it, keeping indices up to date was a significant performance issue.

@neauoire@merveilles.town the metadata is exactly what allowed me to write BeBay (for tracking your eBay auctions, of course) back in my BeOS days.
