PS: yes I still run Ubuntu on literally all of my (work+play) machines, and that won’t change any time soon… a community is more than any single person, no matter how big that person thinks they are.

@sara@hachyderm.io Yiiiiiiikes Thank you for sharing, I had no idea that was the kind of culture Canonical cultivated.

@sara@hachyderm.io I’m really surprised they haven’t been investigated by the EEOC if this is the process.

@sara@hachyderm.io If it makes you feel any better, I've never heard of Canonical and therefore this Mark fellow is a complete nothing [to me].

@sara@hachyderm.io FWIW I have walked out of interviews. I think it might bear repeating that one does not have to put up with this crap if one can afford it.

@sara@hachyderm.io Matches my own experience for another type of position. The strong warnings of major red flags from the CEO got me to stop just a little bit sooner, fortunately. His fixation on high-school-30-years-ago and pseudo-science tests are proofs that he has major issues with understanding even the basics of human psychology. You deserve better.

@sara@hachyderm.io because of an almost word for word similar experience (my last call was one step below Mark, but I also didn’t go to high school) I refuse to use Ubuntu till I’m less upset and traumatized. Fuckers.

@sara@hachyderm.io ugh, sorry to hear this. I applied to a Canonical dev job back when I had just graduated undergrad, thankfully avoided this trauma by virtue of their email service not sending the IQ tests to my email address. I had multiple emails from a recruiter (which they never responded to my replies to) telling me to take the IQ test they’d sent me and saying they’d re-send it, but said test never came even when I gave them alternate emails to try and eventually they/I just gave up.

@sara@hachyderm.io "Nobody wants to work any more (nobody's applying)" Or "We need more H1Bs because there aren't enough qualified citizens" (etc.)

@sara@hachyderm.io thanks, this is very relevant to my life right now. 👻 I've been put off by the rigmarole for a while, but was still tempted.

@sara@hachyderm.io Thanks so much for posting this! I really wish more people would name-and-shame poor interview experiences, especially when the issues are systemic or perpetuated by those in power.

@sara@hachyderm.io oh my god that’s a nightmare. I applied to an EM (web) role there last month and those questions about high school seriously gave me pause. The application got paper shredded and thank god it did

@sara@hachyderm.io as someone who recently went through the process for a normal software engineering role... my process wasn't nearly as bad on the interview side ("only" three technical interviews plus one with HR and one with my recruiter) but it's still a pretty badly done process... The two things that bothered me the most (aside from the kinda insane time investment, especially the written interview) were:

@sara@hachyderm.io why do they waste so much time (yours and theirs) doing this ridiculous process?

@sara@hachyderm.io Geez, and I thought nothing quite sucked like the academic job market.

@sara@hachyderm.io Wow, they'd have lost me at 1, maybe at 2. I don't know what kind of profiles they're looking for but certainly not the kind that can be fulfilled by humans. I saw a few positions in IT security that looked interesting, I can say the interest went to zero.

@sara@hachyderm.io Even 20% of that process I would still consider to be dehumanizingly disgusting. Thanks for letting us know!

@sara@hachyderm.io that job would have sucked so hard. Anybody this disrespectful of your time would be a terrible boss

@sara@hachyderm.io If only you had done better on your ACT/SATs 20+ years ago you'd totally be working there now! 🙄
