@Setok@attractive.space imho the crucial issue is that somehow on #Fediverse is now rooted the idea that growth and federation is an aut-aut pair. #Mastodon sees centralisation as the only way to go to make the software accessible, which it does, but also exposes a huge chunk of Fediverse to the risk of private capitalisation (which is just a matter of time I think). On the other hand, many interesting projects are developing amazing softwares and spaces that make the federation work beautifully, except that a normal Twitter/Instagram/Facebook user would be totally lost, and also communities here tend to be kinda judgmental as if tech ignorance were a sin and not a matter of chance or even absence of privilege. The good implication is that federation is now a topic becoming crucial in the world of social networks. But unfortunately it seems like, as usual, billionaires will get to dictate their view about this

@Setok@attractive.space Ease of use for whom? To do what? I would absolutely like to see Mastodon and the wider fediverse to grow, but I don't think that it is worth any price, and there are inescapable tradeoffs that need to be struck between growth, ethics and community. Bigger isn't better, especially not in a society that is so suffused with capitalism, patriarchy, racism, and other unjust power structures and bad incentives. No platform can be all things for all people.

@Setok@attractive.space Hear, hear! I joined Mastodon because Musk had totally messed up Twitter. I am pleased to be here and also that Musk seems to have relented to restore the original algorithms, to a point that I can still tweet and find engagement in Mastodon.

@Setok@attractive.space I haven’t seen arguments against growth, only against sacrificing something important to enable growth - mainly, against sacrificing the “federation of instances” user experience. Having a default instance simplifies onboarding, which enables growth, but hides that there are other instances that could be joined. I’d rather have a good instance-chooser interface, both for onboarding and migrating, which I think would be almost as enabling and without the sacrifice

@Setok@attractive.space the problem is twofold. Servers plus scale (= bad). Bad UX, if that's really what it is, has 'helped' by slowing scale. With scale Mastodon will be terrible. If you want scale, don't expect a good endgame using federated servers. For now the fedi is best for those few of us who get why it is better, but it isn't better for most because they require simplicity in order to participate. The solution isn't better UX, it is better UX without servers (= centralisation) = Good #UX + #p2p
