@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie How long are we talking? I've been online dating pretty much continuously for almost 25 years... since the PlentyOfFish days. It really hasn't changed a whole lot since then, TBH. :)

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie I've been married twice. I met my first wife online in 2002 on a site called Faceparty. Then I met my 2nd wife at work. I've never 'dated' and if I was trying to date in 2022 I can't see myself having any success. Good luck, it seems much more brutal than I remember it ever being.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie This might give you a giggle, it’s a two-parter I wrote in 2020 as I dipped into Internet dating (if I haven’t tediously shared it with you already): https://www.andcurve.com/2020/03/31/on-getting-into-dating/ It’s /not/ advice! It might amuse. The timing of that article is helpful for context.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie Can't help with getting a date but can help with safety advice when you get one. The book covers warning signs to look for, checks to do, safe meeting places etc. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Womens-Safety-Handbook-Nina-Wilson-ebook/dp/B0BM6N12PP/ref=sr_1_1?crid=2DLQJQ9IY5J8I&keywords=the+women%27s+safety+handbook&qid=1671484143&sprefix=womens+safety+hand%2Caps%2C156&sr=8-1

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie TIL Pringles aren't actually pre-sharpened

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie There was a big change in even browser-based dating sites as quick-fire texting rather than carefully written paragraphs became the norm. It all became much harder. A few texts. A meet. High chances that the other had near zero investment and was already planning to move on to the next one before the date had ended.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie did you ever have a Pringle go in to the roof of your mouth? Or down the side of your gums? The proper use of a Pringle in combat could be lethal. 💀

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie the sharpening of the pringle was the mistake, one must turn it into a cement-like paste and then glue the lion's teeth shut. Not sure where the metaphor is going from there but all I know is I'm hungry and I'm out of sharpened pringles 🦁

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie I don’t even know how people manage now. I met my husband in the quaint old fashioned way. At a bar.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie There is only one constant -- whatever the past, current, or future dating paradigm might be, I will miserably and invariably fucking suck at it. Call me whenever you need someone to set the bar lower or if you need what some psychologists call a 'downward social comparison.' This way for once I'll be more useful than a Tinder Pringle.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie this is why the only thing I ever say to my friends currently dating is "jesus christ that seems hard, can I cook you dinner?"

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie I met my partner on OkCupid over 8 years but even that feels like another era.

@Ciaraioch@mastodon.ie forget the various online services. Low barrier to entry = too much cruft to sift through. I know this sounds old school, and it is. Literally. Take a class somewhere, (in person!) about a topic you’re interested in & interact with the people in the class. It’s a great way to filter for common interests. And even if you don’t meet somebody you won’t have wasted your time (as long as you picked an interesting class/course).
