PSA to please not censor the names of politicians or use coy allusions when talking about politics and world news. Some people have filters that you are bypassing by doing this. *I* have filters that you are bypassing. And before anyone tries to get snide, it isn’t because I’m “not political” or I have my head in the sand: it’s because I don’t use social media for news or politics. I am extremely aware of what is happening in the world and I need to maintain the energy to fight it. I am taking on the responsibility of curating my feed by using the tools available to me, so the least you can do is ensure those tools *work*.

I’m not even asking people to use CWs here, I’m literally just asking that you use normal human language that filters will pick up so that I can keep using this site. I don’t get my news from here. I don’t want to get my news from here. I don’t want to discuss the news here. I spend a certain amount of time a day on awareness and political activities and outside of that time I need to be really careful what I put into my fucking brain so I don’t burn out completely.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I’ve been curating my social interactions and what I follow for a decade or more. I got tired of the arguing and bullshit. Twitter used to have a great feature you could toggle that made you unable to respond to anyone you didn’t follow and I learnt not to bother than I removed the posts and I continue it here And it’s rather glorious, but I also learnt to just remove people many aren’t actually worth it.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I hate the trend of rendering words with special characters or cutesy fake language. Yes, I know it's from platforms censoring certain things, but for fuck's sake, it's like reading something an eight-year-old came up with.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Spelling the names of politicians correctly also helps people like me who ARE trying to get our news from Mastodon but can't figure out which nickname refers to which person. One time, a person decided to use only clever anagrams of politicians names in the alt text of a photo, and I couldn't figure out who some of the politicians were.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Yes. Thank you. I *know* what's happening in the world, but I don't come on mastodon to learn about it. I see so many otherwise great people boost political stuff that bypassed my filters and it's incredibly draining. Yes what's going on is terrible and messed up and I think if people have something they can do safely and without compromising their physical, mental, or emotional health, they should 100% do so. But not everyone can protest or do whatever people feel like they should. I personally am just so burnt out on everything politics and am doing what I can to remove unnecessary politics and news from my life for the sake of my sanity. I've had to sadly unfollow some great people because they were boosting stuff that was bypassing my filters and it made mastodon not feel fun. Saying "The US's dictator" or "tr*mp" doesn't help anyone, for example, it just bypasses my filters to take US politics off my timeline. It's not funny or clever or whatever people think it is. If people can't partake in activism for whatever reason, at least let them avoid unnecessary stressors. I realize I rambled a bit, I just get incredibly frustrated with people bypassing my filters time and time again. No matter how much I try I'm never, ever going to be able to filter out every mangling of a name, every euphemism for an event, every "clever" or "funny" nickname, or every cryptic reference to politics. I'll also note that if people ever make the argument of "We need to do activism, everyone needs to see it," my answer is that no they don't. Your "activism" should never be targeted to bypass the filters of people who don't want it. That's not activism, that's being a jerk and doing the exact thing we want to prevent on mastodon, showing people things they *don't* want to see. You want to post about politics? Great, do it. But at least have decency and use common keywords and/or names that people can catch easily with filters. I'm not sure why it's hard.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I had no idea. I was doing it back on Twitter to avoid the trolls or whatever, but since then, it’s almost like we’re all feeling collectively nauseated just by the sight of his surname, and that’s why I think I was still doing it… not even realising that’s what I was doing. I think it started that way for me during Morrison’s PMship…. just not even wanting to TYPE it, for the gross feelings that immediately come up like hurl….

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Agree! I do follow political news on Mastodon, but there are times I just don't have the mental energy for it, or at the very least want to know what I'm in for. A little heads up, please. You don't need to put a CW on everything, just use correct names so filters can recognize them.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I find the endless silly nicknames infuriating. (For several reasons, but one of them being exactly as you say, that I’m sick of constantly having to add new ‘clever’ names to my filters.)

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io I do not disagree with your intention here whatsoever. I have, when using alternative names like you mention in the past, done this to avoid adding to the already overlarge word cloud for politicians who clearly hold by the adage, "There's no such thing as bad press." People of this ilk thrive on attention, positive or negative. However, I did not consider that a word filter would be bypassed. When I post about politics I do tend to CW and tag, so hopefully that has mitigated some of the harm. My overarching solution has been to just not talk about them at all. I refuse to let bad actors suck the oxygen out of the room.
