One of the smartest and most knowledgeable people I know, who is an MD, uses ChatGPT *constantly* in his daily life. He visited me a few months back & was asking it everything about our trip, about whatever topic we were talking about, using it to plan another trip... This guy loves learning and has spent decades constantly learning stuff on his own in many areas (he's also an app coder) and I think the LLM feels like a shortcut to even MOAR knowledge and information. Pretty sure this...

I think (and hope) Gianni Infantino is going to get booted from FIFA. Quick recap: The guy who just led the FIFA's men's World Cup to record attendance, revenue & Trump ass-licking, recently sprang a proposal to sell off the men's & women's World Cup to the Trump-Kushner crime family. FIFA is a non-profit with 211 member nations (more than the UN, as some FIFA nations, e.g. New Caledonia, are not nation-nations). It's a trust of sorts that distributes funds earned...

I don't have a ton of money invested in stocks (well, I guess it depends on perspective, to a 20-year-old me it's a lot) but I just moved half of it out of the market and into safer things. No one knows when the house of cards will collapse but...

Kind of a niche post, but if any #scuba divers are looking into diving Kaua'i, the famous Tunnels dive is now off-limits to commerical operations. This is a fairly recent change inside Haena State Park; no more permits for any commercial activity. Divers can still dive there but tours and paid guides are not allowed. A local guide just confirmed this to me. I would NOT recommend swimming or diving into the maze of lava tubes without an experienced guide. It's...a complicated system of...

Bad wildfires in Ontario north of Thunder Bay. I've been fishing up that way (years ago) and it's beautiful country with gorgeous lakes. Hard to imagine it all burning. https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/thunder-bay/wildfires-thunder-bay-9.7269683 #climate #Canada #wildfires

Wally Funk dies at 87. She should've been among the first women in space, but sexism stopped her & others. Funk did get a suborbital flight in 2021. Amazing life spent above the clouds, and here she gets a well-deserved detailed obituary. #aviation #space #obituary https://wapo.st/4f1TggE (gift link)

I'm utterly shocked that FIFA admitted they made a huge mistake by giving a red card to the US's leading scorer, whose suspension for Monday's game has been lifted. This is an extremely rare reversal. #WorldCup #MastodonFC https://www.cbssports.com/soccer/news/folarin-balogun-usmnt-world-cup-belgium-fifa-lifts-suspension/

Croatia can blame NASA for that loss. Adidas sent an experiment to the ISS while developing the technology that led to the offsides call that negated the tying goal. #WorldCup #MastodonFC #NASA #space https://www.yahoo.com/news/science/articles/nasa-sent-fifa-world-cup-160000220.html

I wonder how many 18-25 year olds bothered to vote in the California primary. Wait lemme guess...8% of them? Maybe 12. The people will the most to win/lose in elections tend to vote the least...I don't know the answer but it's been a big problem for a long time.

One of my friends with long covid is trying to find a lower stress job. Another is struggling to work from home for a state agency. A third is contemplating early retirement. And I know a few who seem to have had their symptoms resolve. So much of the cost of it is hidden...here some researchers try to put real numbers of it. Since covid began, we in the chronic illness community have talked about how using diagnostic codes to estimate prevalence will lead to a huge undercount. #LongCovid h...

I hope this company does well...I'll give it a 50/50 chance. I hear people saying they want a basic, inexpensive EV but how many will take the offer? There are a lot of tradeoffs here...shorter range, not much for an entertainment system, etc. And yes some people care deeply about data privacy but most Americans really don't. https://arstechnica.com/cars/2026/06/slate-says-its-electric-pickup-will-never-track-you/?utm_brand=arstechnica&utm_social-type=owned&utm_...

So this is interesting. I recently got a router from Gl.iNet that has AdGuard as an option. I turned it on for my entire home network and now when I watch Tubi...there are no ads. After about 90 minutes into a movie it threw up a warning about digital rights or something and stopped playback. I restarted the app and finished the movie just fine.
