I, like a lot of neurodivergent people, am hyperempathetic. This is *not* me saying I’m a good person! It’s actions that make a good person, not feelings. This is me saying that I am empathetic to the point of it being painful and debilitating, and I cannot regulate or control it. If anything, it’s made me a *worse* person because I find myself avoiding things that might upset me. However, I can’t cut myself off from the news completely because, like a lot of neurodivergent people, I have a strong sense of justice and morality, and I could never forgive myself for sticking my head in the sand. Strict regulation of what I put into my brain is how I work around my limitations.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Yes to all of this. I am the same. There are sources and avenues I trust for keeping myself informed. And arenas where I have discussions about current events. My social media space is so rarely that place. This is where I go so I don;t just collapse into a puddle in my bed and never leave it again.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Smarter people than me can probably explain the details of filtering your feed by keyword or hashtag - I believe these are options.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io Thank you for posting this, BTW -- I've got a bunch of similar filters on BlueSky, and this just let me know I could add them here, too. (Off to do so!) But also, firm agreement. I hear enough about Those People and Bad Things from other places.

@astronomerritt@hachyderm.io IMO unfollowing folks that repost distressing stuff to the TL is the only safe way to go. 🤷
