Can the general you please stop assuming everyone uses Facebook and put your thing that you want to promote on an actual web site, with an address that at least has something to do with what that is? And no, Discord is also not the solution!

@GamingWithEars best I can do is a QR code to a PDF on Google Drive with the permissions set incorrectly

  • @GamingWithEars I've responded to you, but the response I wrote is on facebook, behind a discord link that takes you to substack, which then throws you to patreon, which then leads you to a youtube members-only post. Hope you don't mind.

@GamingWithEars Also Instagram counts as Facebook

  • @GamingWithEars we did a survey of people who came to our thing and 100% of them saw it on Facebook, so there's no need to post anywhere else.

@GamingWithEars honestly, I think the answer is really "no". I live in a small city and most of the small business owners just don't have the wherewithal to maintain even a brochure website. And for the few who do, it's definitely not maintained and mostly just says "call me". None of them are like "this is the best setup ever", but it's basically free and they don't have to worry about things like DDOS or lapsed invoices or the site being down. It's not the best for them, but it could be so much worse. Don't get me wrong, I would personally love to have all of these businesses off FB. But I'm not sure where else they would go? If they don't actually want to maintain a website, what's their next best thing?

@GamingWithEars I give you maximum mastodon stars for this (I.e. 1). If I could give more, I would ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

  • @GamingWithEars But I don't understand the problem. They don't want to promote this to me so they put it on FB. I wasn't interested anyway. Problem solved.

@GamingWithEars living in a small town and EVERYTHING that gets organised or sold here is exclusively on Facebook. Even houses for sale/rent aren't posted elsewhere, none of the events happening have websites, stores only have Facebook pages. It feels impossible to properly leave Facebook 🙃 At the same time as other said, what alternative is there for small businesses, esp. in a not very tech/dev-proficient population?

@GamingWithEars Discord is also not: * a wiki * a repository * a substitute for a FAQ * safe from prying corporate eyes * equivalent to self-hosting a thing, "server" language notwithstanding

@GamingWithEars@mastodon.stickbear.me also, please, no more instagram. Don't share a screenshot from an instagram thing, with a shortened url in a picture. Don't share an image with a qr code. Give me an actual url to an actual website, please.
