The *entire* selling point to investors of LLMs is "we won't need to employ people." That's it. That's all. That's why "AI" is worth trillions of dollars. No pesky humans to bother with. It's not "the workers will be more creative" or "we'll help the disabled." There's no investment money for that. A company is what the worst investors are.

@joelle@social.joelle.us its wild that to avoid the bargaining power of workers they will accept the much more substantial bargaining power of enshittified tech giants

@joelle Sure, that's what the corpos are after. But the nation state superpowers that have made this project "too big to fail" have something a little different in mind....

@joelle This is what we all wanted - machines to do the work, so we dont have to. As Arthur C. Clarke said it, "In the future, the goal will be full unemployment - so we can play." It does, however, require a universal basic income, and a heavy taxation of the companies that no longer need human labour.

@joelle Anyone, any company, any poster any account that pushes #AI is contemptible and signaling a desire to be cancelled. Cancel AI - in all forms, on all platforms, by any person. #AI

@joelle@social.joelle.us "Machines do the work; people should do the thinking." AI ruins all those four things. Clearly.

@joelle It's in every tech bro manifesto, too. (Although they usually phrase it as "abundance for all and not having too work", which is just a Big Lie.)

@joelle if it was for helping the disabled there would be great projects that would have succeeded, like Project Naptcha. The only thing that went ok from that project is Tesseract.js, the accessibility part of it still doesn't work.

@joelle we have always been worth more to the employing class dead than alive. they're the same people who only see value in a forest after it has been cut down and turned into toothpicks.

@joelle This is the part that most fascinates me. If they don't employ workers, these workers have no money. People without money don't buy their shit, and no amount of cost cutting helps if you don't sell your shit. It literally happened before and is called "The Great Depression". But their greed has them convinced it won't happen to them.

@joelle@social.joelle.us A true sign that western economies have moved away from innovation to rent-seeking: they don't want to be able to do more, they want to have better margins on what they're already doing.

@joelle There's a funny part in that. Being ignorant they've clearly not realized that there are a number of tasks which simply cannot be done without thinking people. (How they somehow avoided every currently existing service degradation observable to the average person is quite the curiosity.) Whether they get rid of humans and get to use digital sentience (people too) instead (good luck, we have no idea how to make this) or not, the end-result is the same and there is no particular reason for one to comply with one's exploitation.

@joelle A friend recently pointed to a different thing that may be worth the trillions: Having complete control over the information for the masses and thereby their opinions and beliefs. Putting all people out of work is incompatible with capitalism, controlling their beliefs is very compatible with capitalism and consumption.
