@egonw Seems like an excellent reason to ban self-driving cars. I suspect the current well-deserved hate for US Big Tech might help push that forward.

@egonw Oh yeah, the same Waymos i watched crossing a double yellow line in a corner, over and over, one afternoon in San Francisco. It was clearly programmed in that you can cross a double yellow into oncoming traffic.

@egonw they are also an opportunity, because they can be stoppen with a traffic cone, and trapped by some paint. Which in return screws up the infrastructure for all other drivers while cyclists and pedestrians can easily go around.

@egonw Surely it is the litreral job of drivers, and people programming {"vending machines" or "self driving cars"} to programme them to obey the relevant laws, NOT "normal practice". If human drivers break the law, they expect fines, license restrictions, jail time. So obviously the same for programmers in the same position of responsibility.

@egonw I have seen in things in news that I don't like about self driving cars and this one adds to the list; one positive thing though is that they won't be running cyclists over intentionally like many human filth actually do.

@egonw Well, when bikes lanes aren’t accessible from the car lanes, I guess that the car can’t do that (and have no interest doing it, customers can be dropped between the car lane and the bike lane, and small streets have mixed traffic anyway). So, that’s another argument in favor of totally protected bike lanes instead of paint only.

@egonw gotta say, if there's any city that will teach waymo a lesson about not screwing up cyclists, it's amsterdam. i used to bike in Wash DC and thought i knew how to deal with biking in heavy traffic. trying to bike at rush hour in downtown amsterdam changed my mind. i was still a rank amateur by comparison. :)

@egonw Thanks for sharing! I will have an eye on that in germany. Since the city of #Dortmund seems to not punish parking on bike lanes (or parking E-Scooters there), it probably won't change when self-driving cars encourage human drivers to do the same.

@egonw Who'd have ever thought unleashing American trained drivers on UK and European streets without a new driver's test was a bad idea? (Mind you, we do it with tourists, but tourists aren't expected to run a taxi service)
