@catileptic I hope that @jjcelery and @triploidtree see this. Cornelius Quiring, who is very active on IG, seems like a good online resource. I haven't actually used his patterns, but he explains things in ways that really make sense to me. Good luck, and please let us know what works for you!

@catileptic do you happen to have any existing pairs that you like that you could reverse-engineer the pattern? All the better if they're worn-to-nigh-falling-apart-and-headed-for-the-bin so you could disassemble them without the worry of feeling pressure to reassemble them.

@catileptic I can recommend a couple of places to look. I can also recommend charity shop bedding for very cheap practice fabric. Twig & Tail (https://www.twigandtale.com/collections/all-products?uff_39tj8u_collections=465624105255) is a small business that makes printable patterns with lots of adjustments. They have quite a few video tutorials to help, too. Free Sewing (https://freesewing.eu/) is a free pattern generator. You choose a style, put in some measurements, and it makes a pattern.

@catileptic I really like my Chanterelle Pants from #SewLiberated. Perfect rise for me, although I didn’t like the gathered bottom. I have several shorts from that pattern that I wear all the time. Instructions are clear. #HelensCloset is another company with clear instructions and full-sized models. Whatever pattern you choose, start with shorts. #sewing

@catileptic Helen’s Closet is beloved by fat sewists (myself included) for good reason. Clear patterns and instructions, a great fit, and responsive customer support. Beware of Sew Liberated. The thin company owner makes a big deal about her sizes being inclusive but in my experience the plus sizes aren’t drafted well, they’re just bigger but not shaped great. I spent weeks trying to get their flagship dress to work and finally gave up after their only help was to do a full bust adjustment (I did, it didn’t work) or sign up for her (not cheap) class. @catileptic@chaos.social Just an idea... If you have pants that you like - or are close... you can break all of the seams on those into separate panels - to be a pattern for you to work with/modify. Good luck and happy sewing.

@catileptic@chaos.social I often thought about a sewing machine. I'm of a size where trousers come in two sizes: too long and too short. I'm too cheap to pay a tailor, so I just have frayed hems all the time. I wear a lot of t-shirts, and the workmanship is so bad in the sweat-shops that about half the time the seams are pulling out when I get it. A couple of minutes zipping through a machine would make me happy. But there always seems to be a money crunch.
