The true failing of RSS is that you can't track people with it

@lain I loved how the author stated this "problem" with such certainty, then immediately after seemed to realize that readers don't actually want it solved, and tried to justify it by claiming there's no other feasible solution besides making advertisers happy. As far as I can tell, no matter how happy you make advertisers, they won't pay enough to keep publishers afloat, so who cares what they want?

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com Eh, I don't get why some people want analytics so badly. Before the internet, there was no analytics, and we lived, and the companies were making profit. So why do they need analytics now?

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com also whole black box argument is bullsoykaf. Podcasters/articles still get fair amount of data. Also it's data miners fault for being so shit, users started take actions against it. Most customers, even those who care for privacy, wouldn't mind giving some data about them if they had means to control what data it is.

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com The response of some publishers has been to only publish truncated feeds, but I just unsubscribe from these. I used to use gReader Pro which would automatically download the original article and cache it, thus making it look like I was reading EVERYTHING.

  • @lain@pleroma.soykaf.com The true failing of that article is that it can't get its head out of its own head long enough to understand that maybe the new users aren't actually trying to consume COMMERCIAL media using the protocol, so it doesn't matter if it's not well-suited for marketing purposes. I use my RSS feed to collate blogs and encyclopedia-based article websites... both of which make their money from my ancillary purchases (i.e. when I go buy a book they recommend) instead of ads.

@lain@pleroma.soykaf.com Well the author qualifies in the next paragraph that analytics pays the bills. I agree that they don't spend enough time defending that viewpoint, but as of now a huge portion of the internet runs on commoditizing analytics and data.
