I&#39;ve already reduced my personal footprint. Sold my ICE car in 2018. Ride my bike and the bus as much as possible. Grow lots of my own food. If I count all the biochar I make, I&#39;m a net remover of CO2 and have been for quite some time. I don&#39;t do business with billionaires. I deleted my accounts with all the social media sites, shut down my AWS instances, and moved my Kiwisaver out of all US equities. How much impact has any of this had on CO2 levels in the atmosphere? Sweet. Fuck. All. The only possibility we have to turn this thing is to change the system, and the only way we do that is with radical accountability for everyone who profits from our collective misery. Don&#39;t tell me to take individual action. I&#39;ve been doing that most of my adult life and I can see the results. I&#39;m taking names.

@phil_stevens@mastodon.nz I relate. I've been doing the right things since I was 16, and I'm a climate organizer. I have not, actually, saved the world. Every part of Big Energy needs to be dismantled, now.

@phil_stevens It is a strange conceit, that when people demonstrably do harm, people are only allowed to punish them through the vehicle of commerce. That's never been the case in the past. Some asshole pollute the waters? Dead. Some asshole burn down the forest? Dead. Let's find some Golden Middle Way between these two, like, maybe not kill them but rather put them to work in environment restoration.

@phil_stevens Well done. I do lots of what you do but still use fossil fuel for heating. Car an EV. But one alone can’t do it and I am pleased that I am seeing more EVs on our roads and more rooftop solar like mine. I believe when you look at the production sources of electricity rooftop solar is not included. But in 4.5 years produced 14 Mwh.

@phil_stevens @zl2tod personal accountability is mostly a tactic of distraction from corporate responsibility. I need to sort my recycling while CEOs zip around non-stop on private jets, in a world where teleconferencing is the norm? Fark offfffff. I probably need to sort 400 years’ of my own waste stream to equate just one of their flights.

@phil_stevens I'm not telling *you* to take individual action, because you already have. Literally three-digit millions (or more) of the global population haven't. And they're the main problem because most of them can easily make different choice—as you (and me & my family) have. *They* are the ones the business model of the fossil extremists rely on.

@phil_stevens not going to disagree rhat the global/material impact is SFA. I do think an under-appreciated benefit (well, outcome anyway) is that owning your personal impact can focus your awareness very clearly on the scale of the situation, the level and direction of change required, but also the simplicity of the changes and therefore the vastness of the stupidity involved of not taking them. Just gotta harness the rage I guess

@phil_stevens It sure has been a heck of a con to make us blame ourselves instead of the true culprits hasn't it? Over here in America we had one commercial once a long time ago that really summed it up.
