There was a question about LLMs that dominated my feed. (I'm not avoiding the original thread to be passive aggressive; my filters are such that I don't see all of the posts, and replies might get weird. I'm not complaining.) I saw enough to understand that there is a suggestion to make artificial, ahem, intelligence less toxic in every way. What I didn't see: WHAT is the use case for these tools? WHY do we need these things? People are desperate for work now. Why is this the...

It's not available yet for everyone to read, but the Granillo v. State decision out of the Hawai'i Supreme Court is the forceful rebuttal to the predations of the Roberts' SCOTUS that a lot of us have been waiting for. (I believe Todd Eddins wrote the opinion. Here's more about him https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Todd_W._Eddins) If nothing else, this case should be the basis for the "packing" of the court when we throw MAGA out, if not why we ne...

@Linux@planet.moe Clinton's victory in 1992 bought us three more decades of reproductive rights. The difference between a Trump win and an HRC win in 2016 is the SCOTUS we have today. I know all about how imperfect both Clintons are. I don't care. They were always better than their actual alternatives, not the ones I would have wished for.

@Linux@planet.moe I didn't say they were my friends. I said that in those elections, they were better than the GOP. Again, vote in the primaries so we increase our chances of getting good people.

@Linux@planet.moe Then everyone needs to vote in the primaries so we don't end up with these choices. But if we do, not voting ends up screwing us. Voting for the centrist in the general isn't making any changes, but it's buying us time that's keeping the right from sending us back to the 19th century.

Finished *Red Sword* by Bora Chung. Yes, based on the Russia-Qing conflict over parts of Siberia, which Joseon was pulled into. But it's also about colonialism, identity, individuality, and survival. Very good, very disturbing. #bookstodon #korean #scifi

Today is the fourth anniversary of the surgery I needed for colon cancer. I have a year and a few months left of surveillance before I can throw myself a party, but so far, so good. #FuckCancer but also our medical system, which wanted to diagnose me with depression ๐ rather than listen to what was going on before I got to Stage IIIc. I am lucky, because people a decade younger have died of this. Stay on your doctors for better care, stay on your politicians for better #publichealth

#WritersCoffeeClub May 3: Do you write your works locali(s)zed to the setting or your background? Both. My first series is set in Boston. I didn't spend a lot of time on descriptions of the area, so I was pleasantly surprised when readers said they got a good sense of place from it. Some of it may be familiarity on their part; might need more detail in a lesser known municipality. The current WIP is more about my background than locality. But there's a lot of coastal, so...maybe?

My husband and I started reading *Fascist Yoga* by Stewart Home. We're on page 66, and thank god there's only 90 more pages to go. It's A LOT, and as someone who used to teach it, I can't deny any of it. We are way past the European or American origins of the movements. But you knew the whole thing was a scam, right? ๐งต 1/

My fellow Americans: SCOTUS did exactly what we knew they would when Trump was elected. Voting is going to be even more compromised in several states now. If you do not live in those states, GO VOTE. Vote in the midterm primaries through the general in 11/28. You are literally doing this for people who are trapped and cannot. If anyone wants to argue about the inherent corruption of our system and/or gets accelerationist with me, we're done. This is not a game, and I'm not playing #us...

RE: https://mastodon.green/@gerrymcgovern/116489810904590691 I beg you, pay attention to what @gerrymcgovern@mastodon.green is saying here. (FYI, the slave labor in question is being forced from the Uyghurs--remember them?) The point is NOT that we need to keep using fossil fuels; the point is that we need to significantly reduce our energy consumption, regardless of source. (Do NOT have something in your profile about how antifascist you are and then come say that slave labor and environmen...

Saying this up front: I hate Big Energy, and I would die happy if everyone stopped using all fossil fuels right now. Operation Epstein Shield, aka Trump's war of choice with Iran, is highlighting how unsustainable our system is. It needs to change immediately. Let's stop using plastic. Let's convert to local and regional regenerative agriculture. Let's make effective insulation available to everyone. Let's improve our transmission lines. Let's eat less meat. Let'...
