@_elena@mastodon.social I think it's only a myth from people who don't use it.

@_elena when having a thousand followers and talking about tech there's a lot of engagement indeed

@_elena I remember exactly the "revelation" in 2020, when I had on Mastodon (account of a few months) half the followers of Twitter (account of 10 years) and yet I had double the interactions and even more reactions... Commercial social media is a pyramid scheme based on the supposed visibility

@_elena lo stesso accade anche a me, da subito il numero di interazioni del fediverso ha sorpassato di gran lunga quello di twitter, una volta superato lo scoglio iniziale è tutto in discesa con mastodon.

@_elena my first impression is that there is more and it feels like a healthier space overall. I wish I had discovered it sooner. If that really is the case, then it is relieving. It's been demoralizing as a musician to share links to my work, and the engagement is basically nonexistent. There was a time when it was better, but that already was so many years ago

@_elena Many people enjoy algorithmic content, and they also try to manipulate the algorithm for fun or profit. However, on the Fediverse, there is no algorithm to manipulate. Humans boost only quality content. Just ignore those irrelevant posts/claims and continue posting content that is important to you.

@_elena@mastodon.social This is probably kinds subjective, because mine still dry as usual in terms of notifications. And yours happen because you and people around you are able to understand how fediverse works. Me and my friends too. I think the analogy is a little bit of here for proofing if there's engagements in fediverse by showing notification counts. Just saying. Still love the fediverse, though.

@_elena I'm more or less a random nobody, though I do lead a rather unusual and wide ranging life. In two years here, I have about the same number of followers (1000+) as I did after a dozen years on Twitter. I probably posted at least as much there as I do here. While the sometimes clunky UX definitely needs improvement, I think that means that, for most of us, we stay because we like it here, not because it's easy and the latest cool thing. That makes for a more authentic and active engagement by real people. If people are saying there is no engagement, I suspect it's because they came here, didn't know anybody, couldn't find anybody they knew (because discoverability is wretchedly bad here), made a few posts, got bored and left. Or maybe picked the wrong server and got attacked by Nazis or Karens. I guess I've been fairly lucky or something, because I've only blocked a few people for being dicks and I only recently had my first "HOA Karen" experience (ignored it).

@_elena Never heard that, but imagine it comes from advertisers and influencers as there are no metrics for reach, impressions or conversion rate? Interactions on #mastodon and #fediverse are real people responding to real people, they are of higher quality and meaningful. My posts on corporate socials usually spiked briefly and then flatlined. It’s different here, I get responses to years old posts and messages from lovely people who are genuinely interested in my art and in me. I love it here!

@_elena Exhibit N°4791: My comics are (much) more successful here than on Twitter, even though I have three times less followers (5.4k vs. 16k). And I mean dozens or even hundreds of interactions on each post (boosts, likes, comments). Algorithm changes have totally killed reach on all traditional social networks. The only problem with Mastodon is that people go to Bluesky.

@_elena I barely get any interaction over on Twitter, despite replying to many posts in the past few weeks and months. One of the reasons I'm winding down my activity on there!

@_elena I'm loving the Fediverse, chronological feeds are not optional to me, but also I love the fact that I'm commenting on a Mastodon post from Friendica. I tried Mastodon, didn't get along with it -no problem! I can follow all the cool people through a UI that works for me. You can't do that on Meta or X.

@_elena That's easy for you to say, you have 2.1K followers on Fedi. The engagement differs from one person to another. To me at least, Twitter has still delivered me more engagement, despite having very similar follower numbers. And don't come at me with the 'oh but interactions on Fedi are from real people', because the vast majority of interactions on Twitter (likes, retweets, comments) have also been from real people. I've probably had less than 10 bots in the account's lifetime interact with my profile or content. On Fedi I can post as much shit I'd like, and I'll get very little engagement. On Twitter at least I'd get one or two likes, possibly a comment every now and then on a post or comment about anything. One thing I don't like about the lack of an algorithm on Fedi is that it doesn't resurface older posts that may be important. I've missed many posts that I'd consider important because my timeline is chronological, and I don't sit all day on Fedi.

@_elena problem is, that it takes it's time, however on algorithm driven network you just "got it" and it's feels better (as usually it's already based on some knowledge - google, Meta, ...).

@_elena How can there be “no engagement” on the Fediverse? I posted about this recently, but I’ve been here on Mastodon for only about a year and I already have about as many followers as I spent six years on Twitter getting. Yet, it feels like I have ten times as many due to the amount of engagement I get. This place feels alive, unlike e𝕏-Twitter, which was already dead before arrival into Elon Musk’s hands.

@_elena Although my interaction is bursty, as it ever was on social media, I find plenty of interesting content from people I follow, and then the connections. Twitter in it's last days (for me, 2022) had become clunky, bloated and frequently toxic. Not had that problem on Masto and the bonus of being able to move instance.

@Radgryd@mstdn.games 2024-11-21 12:44
@_elena I think the big issue here is that likes/boosts/replies are not shared to every server, so others might see your post and go, "Wow, only 2 likes." when in reality, it has 70.
-
@shellsharks@shellsharks.social 2024-11-21 13:36
@_elena I agree with you, but the reality for many who try to establish themselves here is they *do* get little/no “engagement" on things they post. This is due to low-discoverability and just low follower count. But it’s just not how Fedi works. If you want “engagement”, then ENGAGE. Like, it's easy to get stars, replies and even folks following you if you're the one to reach out first and reply to someone elses post, rather than waiting for stuff you post into the void to get replied to.

@_elena i find some posts get lots of interaction on our Mastadon and none on Bkuesky and visa versa. Maybe its a healthy thing that different platforms evolve different uses and culture.

@_elena My personal feeling about algorithmic feeds is pretty much the same as "targeted" ads. In this case, they miss much more than they hit. So you end up with a feed you mostly ignore. For example, I was on Facebook many years ago (long since left). I had both friends and family and news type things (for example Progressive magazine) in my feed. The posts from friends and family were short and I could see what they were up to with what I could see in the feed (i.e. I didn't have to click on their posts). News articles I had to click on to see what they were about. A lot of them I didn't actually read once I saw what they were about, click bait is like that. Didn't take long before my entire feed was news things -- no friend or family at all. And the news things became more and more clickbait as the algorithm drug up new things for my feed. I could scroll for hours before I saw something actually useful. Among other things, this is what killed FB for me.

@_elena nobody really boosts anything that doesn't feel like a general vague statement. Nobody really helps eachother? Fedi for the future.

@ilja@ilja.space 2024-11-21 17:41
@_elena what attracted me most is that you showed an enthousiasm of fedi, and actually went deeper in when people mentioned things. When people mentioned friendica, you didn't ignore it, you went in to explore it. It's maybe sad to say, but that's actually a refreshing change from what we often see. And ofc, I suspect that mentioning on fedi that you want to learn about floss and linux, and then actually go for it, is kind of an "engagement" cheat code :blobfoxlaughsweat:

@_elena I got one business "conversion" on Mastodon when I had 3 followers. Meanwhile LinkedIn routinely shows my posts to only 3 viewers in 48h, zero conversions in months. So yeah.

@ZhiZhu@newsie.social 2024-11-21 19:14
@_elena I had a little over 3,000 followers on Twitter. I have a little over 2,000 followers in the Fediverse. The engagement in the Fediverse is far higher (3 - 4 times higher) than it ever was on Twitter.
