@smeg@assortedflotsam.com Shall I be the one pedantic nerd that misses the point of the joke and comments that elephant babies are not, in fact, even close to the biggest babies on earth? Blue whale babies are much, much larger at around three tons.

@smeg In my experience, it's rare for a commute cyclists to use the cycle lanes. In fact, it's only the casual rider that uses them. Cyclists seem to thjnk they're good enough for the Tour de France, yet they peak at 20kmph on the flat, maybe 30 downhill. When people have to travel about an hour on average to get to work (up to 2 hrs for some), that slowdown isn't very considerate of people needing what work they can get― urban sprawling. It is, in a word, poorly planned and designed cities.

@smeg While I’m in complete agreement on the sentiment, baby whales (particularly the big baleen species, at 1.5-2 tons) dwarf baby elephants.

@smeg Elephants are seriously kewl. I know Ringling Bros. was obnoxious, but when I saw the show (mid 1980s), the elephant trainer would stand on a teeter board, the elephant would run up to the other end, stomp on it with one foot, and the trainer would land on the elephant's shoulders. The elephant was grinning truly evilly as s/he ran up to and stomped the board. My mom, who grew up on an old New England farm, insisted that animals taught their trainers tricks. I think she was right.

@smeg Just to split hairs, they are the biggest land mammal on earth. The blue whale calf far outweighs an elephant calf. The blue whale calf equates to Donald Trump in a tantrum.

@smeg thanks for sharing facts about the elephants. I have also visited these friends in Murchision falls national park of Uganda. But I went through an experience with elephants that I will never forget. They acted as if they wanted to attack the vehicle in which we were . They surrounded us,and no where we could go! The reason behind this, they wanted to protect their babies who were lying through our way. #nature #biodiversity #environment #animals

@smeg regardless of the pedantic arguments about baby sizes and bike lanes - I think this post was cleverly structured! I liked the way you drew us in with a story about cute baby elephants- complete with picture - and then made a surprising yet logical leap to the point you wanted to make. Nice form 👌

@smeg If they add 10' or whatever of width to the pavement to facilitate bike lanes, that's fantastic! Please! Use my tax money and go for it! If they don't, and instead reduce lanes on a congested road in a city that deals with snow and freezing rain a third of the year... or re-stripe it into narrower lanes that are less safe for everyone, that's just stupid. I hate funding "stupid" with my tax money.
