Little known fact: XML was invented by Dr. Xavier Markup-Langley, who wanted a bloated and complex format that was still not as complex as SGML. It also was fuelled by his rivalry with Samuel Godwin Markup-Langley, his cousin and creator of SGML.

You shouldn't use AI to communicate with another human being. I understand paraphrasing and copypasting things. We all do that. Anyone who says they don't is a liar or a smartass. But plagiarism is defined as wholesale copying of what someone else wrote without putting it in your own words. Why would doing this with AI be any more acceptable?

Lest you think that union-busting is strictly a private sector activity, my best friend works for one of the University of California’s libraries. She is paid way less to work for their library than a normal person in her job would be, by policy, just because it’s the library. About 40% less. The university told her that’s just how they do things and that was policy. The library unionised. The school tried to bust the union. Correspondence about it “mysteriously” disappeared. They stated their...

I don't think tech is "cooked" because of AI. How can a field that was ruined by capital long ago fall any further from grace?

Sometimes I think about the fact I let two furry and ridiculous guys who I knew would act like they owned the place the moment they settled in and demand their own food and their own place to poop into my home on purpose, knowing they’d do all this and need all this. I love my kitties tho.

The concept of "man-made horrors beyond my comprehension" got me thinking... What if, a three-axis system: X: Natural ↔ Man-made Y: Understandable ↔ Beyond comprehension Z: Horrific ↔ Delightful Natural horror beyond comprehension: supervolcano Man-made horror beyond comprehension: the modern economy Natural horror within understanding: those spiders in Australia the size of dinner plates Man-made horror within understanding: VX nerve gas Natural delight beyond comprehension: mo...

Imagine showing someone from the 30's ChatGPT. "Wow! There must be a lot of little old ladies doing that!" "They're... not..." "Well what's doing it?" "A computer." "Oh. You mean a person???" "... I do not. We made rocks think in the 50's and it's all gone to shit since then."

The thing about arguing with fascists is you are assuming that it'll be like the fascists are going to play a fair game of chess with you but instead they're just eating the pieces.

When I hear centrist I think the kind of person who would say something like "it's too extreme to throw trannies in a woodchipper, no I prefer the moderate position of just making it illegal to be trans and if you're caught being trans you're tossed in a mental hospital instead."

I figured it might actually be time to explain myself about this. I release most of my software CC0/Unlicense because I want my software to belong to the commons. The things I don't, I have a deliberate reason to do. The thing is... I don't make much stuff that a company would likely want to "steal." What company will want a beep program? Or an optimising brainfuck interpreter/compiler? Or a regex crate? Or an async wrapper around getaddrinfo()/getnameinfo()? What's the...

SPD identified the 2 year old victim to KOMO, which they are NOT SUPPOSED TO DO without consulting the family KOMO then identified the child, TWICE, in violation of journalistic standards SPD still has not briefed the public on the shooting despite making two arrests. Fuck KOMO. Fuck SPD.

When I explained what being a therian means to my girlfriend she asked if it was like being trans. I tend to be cautious of such comparisons because it makes a lot of trans people who believe their dysphoria is the only dysphoria ever invented very angry. But honestly I'm kinda tired of these people being delicate about it. One source of anger is "how could this possibly be real?" Well transphobes say the same thing about gender dysphoria, so I won't entertain this argument...

Everyone wants FOSS maintainers to work on shit by hand, thanklessly fixing bugs and especially security bugs immediately for decades, propping up something they need for work, for enthusiast use, etc. No one wants to pay them a damn dime to do it though. You ever stop to think about how fucked up and entitled that is?

I don't think people understand the scale at which slop is in everything now. It isn't "just a few projects." It's literally tons of projects. Linux kernel. hidapi. libusb. Windows. MANY Rust libraries. Alpine Linux. Fedora. Ubuntu. Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, there are countless more. It's basically impossible to avoid slop now. Like I do not mean difficult, I mean if you work in this space, you are dealing with something coded by...

Hot take: I actually... like Fedora's security posture? I used to not give a fuck about security but in recent years... yeaaah I do. Because well... *points to everything going on rn*. I update daily, I encrypt my drives, I use secure boot, I use the TPM on this thing for signed DKMS for nvidia and other keys, I actually *like* SELinux even if it was confusing at first, I have considered seccomp support in things I write (I even wrote a demonstration echo daemon that uses seccomp). I wish...
