@smeg If they add 10' or whatever of width to the pavement to facilitate bike lanes, that's fantastic! Please! Use my tax money and go for it! If they don't, and instead reduce lanes on a congested road in a city that deals with snow and freezing rain a third of the year... or re-stripe it into narrower lanes that are less safe for everyone, that's just stupid. I hate funding "stupid" with my tax money.

    Reducing number of lanes reduces traffic, and making roads narrower increases security. Reducing lanes makes going by car less attractive, increasing the number of people that seek alternatives (bike, public transport, or alternative routes), reducing overall traffic. People get too comfortable with wide lanes, leading to less attentive drivers and more accidents. Narrower roads are much safer because they *feel* less safe.
