I've just stumbled across this incredibly useful explanatory chart on mansplaining. Petition for this to be prominently displayed in every workplace. https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20180727-mansplaining-explained-in-one-chart

@michcampbell@fediscience.org Generally good, but surely the arrow to Probably Mansplaining from someone with significantly more experience and where most men in the same position would not know is an overreach – in fact the only way not to mansplain according to this is to be _asked_ to explain. Sometimes everyone gets things wrong or would be _expected_ not to know: in those situations isn't it just explaining, regardless of whether it's solicited?

@michcampbell@fediscience.org I must admit that I can't seem to get the balance right between mansplaining and shutting up completely I frequently misread women's phrasing and body language in a way that tells me they don't understand some important feature of "thing". So it absolutely FEELS in the moment like they need help. The only solution I can come up with is to back off and only offer help when it is expressly requested or actual harm seems imminent That has risks though

@michcampbell@fediscience.org I wonder if there is a version for ADHD-splaining? :) (I'm 90% joking here, keep that in mind) As a man, and an ADHD-head, I find myself explaining stuff a lot, not because I don't believe the woman is not smart enough or anything, my brain is like "YES I KNOW THIS ONE!! let's GO!) however, in practice I learned that it doesn't matter the difference. If I ADHD-Splain at a woman it's man-splaining regardless of my intent. That one took me a long time to learn. Shut up brain.

@michcampbell@fediscience.org Quick qualifying question here. Did Ms. Goodwin intend this flowchart seriously, or as a joke just to highlight the topic and make a point that men need to be more humble and thoughtful?

@michcampbell@fediscience.org Seems like some of the guys in this discussion are stuck somewhere between "this is not simplified enough for a man to understand it" and "until every combination is spelled out separately, I'm going to lawyer the hell out of this subject".

@michcampbell@fediscience.org Strike the gender references. Make it about tech. It becomes nerdsplaining. To the point of the original post, the chart is spot on.
