I'm on a conference call, and some sneaky person is occasionally muting speakers mid flow, or just kicking people off the call. It is hilarious

#WritersCoffeeClub 7/27 What's a writerly growing pain you're experiencing right now? Getting off Google and Microsoft for writing, ditching GoodReads, and struggking through the learning curve of Libre Office and Collabora. It's been a thing

Dear #women Do you modulate your voice higher or lower when you are with men? Like, does your voice rise around men and get more "girly" or do you maybe go down and fry around men?

I have known a few psychopaths. Some by virtue of work or research for books, and some by accident. A few things stand out to me 1. They are very unlike Hollywood or common depictions 2. There is something very fucked with the diagnostic criteria, and it's painfully obvious that if anything psychopathy is a syndrome comprsing a cluster of different things 3. Most of them are invisible 4. Some of them are extraordinarily violent and aggressive with scant regard for outcomes 5. Some are...

I saw a guy react to a YouTube video by a young woman who does bodybuilding. Her video was basically "hey, this is me. If you don't like my physique, that's fine, but don't @ me" His reaction was essentially "ok, you are pretty, but not my type" It got me thinking about this old saw that one has "types" of people to whom one is attracted - hair color, body shape, etc. etc. and how shallow and foolish that is. Like of all the things about a person, thei...

Hey, human Indie #writer here No, I am not going to ask you to buy my #books - even though that would be grand I'm also not going to ask you to review my books - ditto What I AM begging you to do is glance at my stuff, and bump any friend who you think would like this kind of writing. If your friend likes short and tight stories about murder and misadventure: https://www.kobo.com/us/en/ebook/the-machinery-of-fate If they prefer novels with endearing but murderous ladies: https://www...

#ScribesAndMakers 4/17. What's something you've learned in recent research? My own? Just other research I found interesting? I mean, under my other profile I have two day jobs doing different kinds of research. In the one program, I am just amazed at how little states are doing to prepare for shocks. In the other, I am amazed at how patients are forced to build bridges between institutional silos In other people's research - I am just blown away by how poorly we handled...

The new SMV thing is dumb 2. Attraction...

As an almost 70 year old man, I have some advice for young men. Please boost this if you think it will help 1. Your voice doesn't need to be heard. In fact, realizing that you don’t HAVE to have an opinion on everything and voice opinions or ideas in meetings or social gatherings, is amazingly liberating. You can actually just shut up, and relieve yourself of all that effort and stress. Let Bob utter his embarrassingly dumb idea, let Shirley have a say. You can just let it be for the most...

Q5: Many of us have stories about how we got into making, often evolving someone who mentored or supported us. How do you try and pay it forward and help people new to making? #MakersHour As a writer, this is really a big deal. The way to help new writers is to bring them into welcoming communities, and help undo (probably) decades of bad instruction and stupid "advice" they have received from schoolteachers, critics, bookbloggers, and all the myriad people with pithy but foo...
