@tim Ehhh - in that case, I'm don't understand the norms either. I follow people or accounts that share or boost things that interests me, and I honestly don't think that should ever be a problem. All that to say that I'm good - no need to apologize. At all. :)

@tim I wouldn’t worry about it at all. I can’t speak for other people, but it seems weird to me that someone would complain about being followed on a public social network. Anyone who doesn’t want you to follow them can block you.

@tim followed you back which is a strong indication i don't mind at all since i don't do that without looking at bios and toots. 😊 That is a lot of folks to be following. Does my head in - prefer smaller communities where it feels like i can get to know people better - but if it works for you, go for it. 🌸

@tim from this end: who you follow or not or unfollow is 100% up to you(*); likewise, how much you post or like or boost or neither is 100% up to you. Some people post a lot but don't reply much; some people don't post much but boost a ton, and (no doubt) some people just read (except that we never see them). Your experience of the community is whatever and however you make it. (*) Some people (not me) give a different status to "mutuals": if you follow me and I also follow you, we're mutuals, and in that case, if you unfollow them, they may also unfollow you. Also, some people like to exercise more control over who follows them; those people, you "request to follow" and they will approve you or not. In that case, having something on your bio that looks as if a human is behind the account may be helpful.

@tim No worries and welcome. I think I started with about a hundred follows when I started. Then you realize that some prominent people don't post and the fun is finding people with common interests and locality. You can interact as little or as much as you feel comfortable. Be warned, the interactions do grow you.

@tim Im not sure what you are apologizing for. There are ways for individuals to block, mute or otherwise engage with or disengage with others on the Fediverse automatically. Not everyone is an overly sensitive drama queen.

@tim There are no rules like that here. If people don't want you to follow them, they can make it so you have to Request to Follow, and those people typically mention their follow/following preferences in their bio. And as a private person, you don't have to share, interact, or do anything that you don't want to. I say follow to your heart's content, and avoid following people who put up road blocks and whose preferences you don't fit. Make this place what you want.

@tim I got your follow today. Honestly, Im glad you are here. Lots of eco-oriented projects and ideas being discussed here It might take a little doing with respect to hashtag use but I think you will be able to find other users who share yiru various interests.
