the other day I learned that what actually tells you how uncomfortable summer heat is is not the (relative) humidity (that weather apps give you), but the dew point temperature. If that is above 20 C, it's unpleasant outside. Unfortunately, most weather apps seem to give you the relative humidity and not the dew point (Merry Sky gives you both). Today I learned that there is an approximate but simple formula that (so my source said) gets the dew point temperature to within about a degree C:...

thunderstormy noises outside. There were kids playing in the playground until about a minute ago, but only two teenage boys are left. It hasn't started raining yet but looks very close to it.

a little #rstats #rstudio oops somewhere: the latest stable R Studio (with a version 2026.06) doesn't run for me because I have *too recent* a version of R (4.6.1 rather than 4.6.0). I have downloaded a 2026.07 daily build, so we'll see how that goes.

@cstross@wandering.shop one time, I was travelling on a train through Cowdenbeath in December around 3 pm, and it was getting dark. (On the same trip, I went from Glasgow to Mallaig: it was dark when I left Glasgow, and dark again before I left Mallaig.)
