I have Fujichrome R25 Single-8 8mm film on which one of the color layers has spontaneously formed #Sierpinski #triangle #fractal like patterns, all over the whole 15m roll. It is unclear if this has happened through some biological or physical process, and would like some help finding out.

    ok, here is a crop from photo taken on retro 80s, loaded from bulk roll which was stored in same place as that R25 cart. quite clear fungus growth shot & developed today

  • @nosfe I used to work in the film to video transfer business, and I saw customers' film coming in with this same kind of phenomenon. I always thought it was simply age, or film that was stored improperly..causing the emulsion to degrade, coming off layer by layer. One color layer comes off, then the color of the surface changes. The emulsion in general simply cracks as it comes off. You probably want to buy something like this to clean and strengthen the film https://www.film-tech.com/products/filmguard.php

  • @nosfe There's a couple of different rule-sets that can produce Sierpinksi/Pascal triangles and they are all very very simple! Here, I personally think bacterial first, but maybe it's lower level than that.

    @nosfe This is exposed film right? I see repeated frames of actual winter trees. The pattern I see suggests some element coming in from the edges has preferentially moved towards the center of the film along some scratches, and from there is separating the film layers. The blue areas appear dirty, in dots along horizontal scratch lines and at the expanding fronts of the triangles. This suggests that the triangles are filling in, rather than simply growing larger. I think this is the biggest hint that this is predominantly a biological process. Did the film suffer some extreme? Also, see the ghosts if the tracking holes? This means that the (supposed biological) process required some level of anaerobic environment to grow.

    @nosfe Never seen this before, and I've seen a lot of deteriorated film. Best guess: some static electricity influenced bacteria, because it seems to start at the edges and propagates inside. Maybe ask https://www.dagiebrundert.de/contact.html , she's got a lot experience with old films.

    @nosfe this is amazing, I honestly have no idea it made me think of an enzyme some bacteria have that naturally looks like sierpinski style triangles, but the scale is completely different https://cen.acs.org/biological-chemistry/Enzyme-forms-complexes-fractal-geometries/102/web/2024/04 the shape also kinda reminds me of Feigenbaum Trees and Menger sponges although I do still think Sierpinski triangles are the best way to describe it I also see more lichtenberg-style shapes on another color layer, which makes me wonder if maybe it's caused by (static) electricity?🤔
