It's so odd to me, to see many smart people re-debating and re-iterating the thinking about #AI, which I and so many others in the #SFF community worked through after Vinge published his #Singularity paper in 1993. But today they go further and take it far more literally than we ever did.
I suppose this is because AI is current and immediate, while it was pie in the sky to us. But really? It remains naive speculation and we, at least, understood that.

So #Google is sacrificing their children to their mechanized #Moloch.
A few noteworthy aspects:
(1) As always, it’s worth keeping in mind that #LLMs and generative imagery are NOT the whole of #AI.
(2) The willingness to shut down such a celebrated and illustrious project as #AlphaFold demonstrates the extent of the growing financial desperation hidden behind the #singularity hype about #LLMs. They've stretched their resources — and the resources of the world economy and the physical environment — to the limit, and they're STILL nowhere near showing the returns they've promised. The skin of the #LLM bubble grows ever thinner.
(3) We CANNOT allow gigantic accumulations of private capital to exist — not if we value our lives, our freedom, and the physical environment that sustains us. Not even if we believe that there are approaches to #AI that are still worthwhile.
(4) Ceterum censeo: the #datacenters — the temples of the mechanized #Moloch — must be destroyed.

I’m really excited to share a piece of art that’s been two years in the making. I call it Algorithmic Precipitation.
The piece is built from a custom printed circuit board. In the top copper layer is a city intersection, with a woman crossing the street. An everyday moment from a future that hasn’t quite arrived yet.
Across the scene, a downpour of small green raindrops falls from the sky, rendered using a grid of WS2812-2020 LEDs controlled by an ATmega328PB microcontroller. Two white LEDs occaisionally flash like lightning. A single amber LED mimics a failing streetlight.
The work is an exploration of what a post-singularity world might look like, where the boundary between the natural world and technology has blurred, and both are part of the same evolving system.

Every now and then someone brings up #EffectiveAltruism, #TESCREAL, #RokosBasilisk, #Rationalism, or some other #Musk related nonsense. I ridicule it, or laugh, and move on. The whole evil god of Roko's Basilisk is so silly it doesn't feel worth writing about. But people started a whole cult over it and killed a bunch of people.
Since then I've been meaning to actually spend time tearing it down. So I think it's time to go kill a god. Fortunately it involves making fun of Elon Musk specifically and all the #AI-pilled #TechBros more generally, so that's nice I guess.
Also, I make the argument that we're all in a simulation that only exists to torture Elon Musk.
