If I believe my iPhone weather app, Newport has a worse AQI than Portland this morning. It says 153 here, not sure where it’s measured, though a Purple Air map shows one at 134. I should get a sensor, weather is very local here (like by the block), and it’s super hazy, but I don’t smell smoke. The sunrise picture sure shows it though. #orwx #newportoregon #oregoncoast

Zooming in on Oregon, the enormous scope of ongoing wildfire outbreak is clear. Numerous large smoke plumes from dozens of active fires--which have now burned over 1 million acres in Oregon alone--are casting a broadening pall across the interior Northwest & N. Rockies. #ORwx

Yesterday's "lightning bust" in eastern Oregon & Washington has already resulted in >100,000 acres burned & dozens of new wildfire ignitions. Many are in grass & brush and may be managed soon, but at least 10 are in heavier (forest) fuels and are taking off this PM. #ORwx #WAwx

My SIL is at a church youth camp near Mount Hood and sent me a video of her hiking through a thunderstorm in the woods yesterday. I inquired further and she told me the leaders didn't know it was going to storm. I reached out to our bishop and we're going to put together a workshop so that the adult leaders can be empowered to know what to look for to avoid this in the future rather than relying on a simple phone weather app. I don't fault people for not knowing, but now that I know it's a problem I feel like it's my responsibility as a meteorologist to help improve the situation. For now they're proactively texting me asking for updates through the end of the campout. Glad to see they're doing what they can. #weather #ORwx #LDS

New instance, new #introduction. Hello everyone! I’m a meteorologist working at a company that launches #weather balloons. On Mastodon, I toot about #weather, mostly #BCstorm, #WAwx, and #ORwx. I recently moved from White Rock, B.C. to Hermiston, Oregon and am excited to be back in Oregon and closer to family.
