#NWT #canada She added that without cutting emissions, adapting public infrastructure and health care systems to new climate realities will be far too costly. “We simply will not be able to spend enough money to compensate for all of the people who are going to have to evacuate due to wildfires,” she said. “All of the floods that are going to take out the highways that people need to be able to cross in order to seek care.” https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/north/nwt-climate-change-energy-oil-and-gas-9.7258356 #ClimateChange #pollution #ecology #climate

a few hours away from my home town, a flight of a half dozen AT-602 air tractors gracefully scoop up water from the mighty mackenzie river, and return to bombing a wildfire encroaching on Fort Simpson. safe hunting to the crews working this fire. we sadly lost 3 people in a Turbo Commander bird dog crash last week. hard to imagine a more dangerous job. 🙏 source: Scott Gordon & Liidlii Kue First Nation #wildfires #nwt #canada #aircraft

you might remember that a few days ago i posted about the world war iii lightning show we got in edmonton, with 10-20 strikes per minute at one point. apparently, that was absolutely nothing. look at the insanity just west of Fort Simpson, NWT (canada's north, in the deh cho region). each of those points is a single lightning strike over a 24h period today. 😬 you can see where the entire storm tracked from the lightning strikes alone. it's heavily forested boreal throughout that region, with very old growth, extremely dry, and tons of fallen timber just ready for an ignition. every one of those strikes has the potential to ignite a new wildfire. source @cabinradio@mstdn.ca: https://cabinradio.ca/298833/news/environment/wildfires/danger-still-high-evacuees-should-prep-for-long-haul-village-says/ #wildfires #nwt #canada #wx

@JugglingWithEggs@mstdn.social Wish I had a good answer to that one. Being a #boater I have never tried actually seeing the #Broads by land. Places like #Wroxham and #Horning have plenty of possibilities for #riverside views but not broads. Most Broads have edges too soggy to have roads near them and most of the banks are in private hands or the hands of organisations such as the #NationalTrust and #Norfolk #Wildlife Trust, whose priorities do not to encourage unencumbered access by the masses. Malthouse Broad, near Ranworth, must be one of the best exceptions. I've never tried to reach Salhouse or Wroxham by road, but the owner of the first offers moorings which are accessible from a car park some 800yds away and it's probably possible to explore the grounds around the sailing club at Wroxham Broad. If you don't mind being part of a party then the #NWT do have guided walks at #Hickling.
