@sophiajanehayden_author@indieauthors.social I nearly always include a prologue, but I mix up the ways it works to keep things fresh. I’ve used one to introduce the character to the reader, to introduce some information the protagonist isn’t aware of, started off one book from the perspective of a character who’s more of a bystander than a participant and, in one book, thrown my protagonist straight into the action, in medias res, as it were. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

On this day, in 1536 – Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, had the book thrown at her. She was arrested and imprisoned on charges of adultery, incest, treason and witchcraft. From a writer’s perspective I believe most commentators have missed one important fact. Recently historians were said to have found a hidden detail in one of her portraits which was a rebuttal of the charges of witchcraft. This centres on the allegation that she’d been polydactylic (from Greek polys, many, and daktylos, finger), meaning having an extra digit, implying she was involved in witchcraft. All in all though, it’s probably worth mentioning how unlikely it was that Henry would have married her in the first place if she’d really been in possession of a superfluous pinkie… Bleedin’ obvious when you think about it! #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

Happy Beltane, everybody. Today is the third festival celebrated by neopagans and other like-minded people during the Wheel of the Year. Here’re a couple of fun facts you might not be familiar with: Often regarded as a fire festival, people attending walk around or between bonfires and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. At this time, household fires are doused and then relit from the Beltane bonfire. The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or fairies) are thought to be especially active at Beltane and the goal of many Beltane rituals is their appeasement. Many scholars see the aos sí as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits of times gone by. At dawn or before sunrise on Beltane, maidens would roll in the dew or wash their faces with it, as morning dew was thought to bring good luck and health. It’s also thought that a man who washed his face with soap and water on Beltane will grow long whiskers on his face. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

Guess who found out the hard way Merlin quietly changed the app to automatically delete your recordings by default 😩 Merlin does not automatically save every recording you make. When you’re finished recording a bird, hit the red stop button at the bottom of the screen to stop recording. If you’d like to save the recording to review later, tap the “Save” button at the top of the screen, and the recording will be saved in “Sound ID Sessions”. @bengo@mastodon.social @strypey@mastodon.nzoss.nz @benpate@mastodon.social @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @nlnet@social.nlnet.nl That's the pathway to solutions. Dare to dream. Have personal dreams and know how they relate to others. Dare to play. Actually do share dreams with others, and try to relate them. Cross-pollinate ideas to find actionable steps towards dream realization. Make things more than the sum of their parts, 2 + 2 = 5 cents. https://coding.social/blog/shared-ownership/#how-do-we-ignite-the-commons Rinse, repeat, scale, sustain. And emergent potential balloons exponentially. It is clear to see that a united commons will set the dragon roaring, revealing itself, breathing golden fire of progress. Technology paternalism, I think, is more general phenomenon of the blinders we all wear in modern society. Dogma's and biases deeply engrained in ourself, part of everday life. It forces us all in like straitjacket roles, to be experts in narrow fields. Best we can do, yet unnatural, artificial wrong breakdown, top-down again. Holistic grassroots evolution and natural sustainable growth, is the path.

@takto@fe.disroot.org @lnsartwrk@organica.social Fiquei em dúvida. Eles receberam fundos vindos dos EUA recentemente, mas o envolvimento europeu parece mais antigo e maior 🤔 “We rather use public funding sources, so far from EU and US origins, to help our efforts in instigating a decentralized and diverse chat messaging eco-system based on Free and Open-Source community developments.” https://delta.chat/en/help#how-are-delta-chat-developments-funded

Weekend Side Note If a hypothetical investment fund of significant size, say $180B, were to badly underperform for 2025, the results have serious implications. In Canada, the TSX performed an astoundingly rare return of 28.5%. A well- managed fund performing at the rate of the market should expect a return of $50B resulting in a fund sized around $230B at year end. If a hypothetical, poorly managed investment fund gained, say, a paltry 7.5% on such a generously giving market year, they should get a return of around $14B and final fund total of $194B at year end. Counted in billions, 14 can appear a big number unless weighed against its absence of return. The poorly managed fund has actually incurred a short-term “loss of gains” in a rarely generous year of around $35B. In the long term, over say the next ten years, that loss of $35B increases, at a yearly return of the initial paltry 7.5% (normally good for an underperforming year), to roughly double or $70B. Fortunately, if the hypothetical fund continues under its current mismanagement, the ten-year 7.5% return is unlikely, thereby reducing the “missed out on” $70B to around $40B as best, or in this case worst, result from an extreme hypothesis of missing funds during one calendar year. Such “loss of gains” exaggerated annually accumulate to massive losses of squandered opportunity over decades. In the real world, it is merely $14B thanks to the generous “hard to lose” market year, and the loss of opportunity goes unchecked while the pennies get counted. #how #money #works

The viral demonstration of sub-30-second token launches represents a critical inflection point, collapsing technical barriers and democratizing market entry to an unprecedented and potentially destabilizing degree.
