#TodayILearned that A24 Films, the makers of the “Backrooms” movie, has been issuing DMCA takedowns on creators that make “backrooms”-themed content. To be clear: the “backrooms” concept has been around long before the movie. The first mention of it was in a 4chan /x/ creepypasta thread in 2019, made by an anonymous author. NO ONE owns the concept or the word “Backrooms”, as far as I can tell. A24 is backpedalling on the strikes, blaming it on automated tools gone wild. But this whole thing is just another example of how the copyright strike system benefits large corporations, whether or not they are actually entitled to claim copyright in the first place. @serrebi@tweesecake.social I don't even care. I won't take action on myself for obvious reasons. Nor will I bother if they try to go after anyone else. I treat these tools like the very real threats to someone's free speech that they are. And just like the #DMCA notices it just doesn't go answered.
