@CowMan @Natasha_Jay @xgebi @benlockwood Fair enough, the ancestors of Symbian predated WinCE, but the company and brand name did not. However, that wasn't my point. I was pointing out that MS was pitching its OS for something like 15 years before iOS and Android were released. MS had their chance, and they did a terrible job. Then, they killed Nokia to try to get back in the game.

@Natasha_Jay @xgebi @benlockwood MS was doing mobile devices before anybody else. WinCE predated Symbian, and was probably the reason there were no "smart" devices a decade earlier than their appearance. Their "innovation" was always garbage ... Oh wait... The same as Copilot...

@xgebi @benlockwood When was that? Before BillG was born? Wasn't it evil as soon as he dreamt it into existence?

To teach in the time of ChatGPT is to know pain

LLM use is the most demoralizing problem I’ve faced as a college instructor.

@rjblaskiewicz Thank you. Your original statement was a little terse, so I had difficulty figuring out exactly how the student tripped your alarm. When I was in high school, our teacher used to read Cliff's Notes and deliberately ask questions that weren't in it to catch students who hadn't done the reading

@rjblaskiewicz "I caught one when it confidently made up a quote in an article I know better than anything I've ever written myself." This statement requires clarification and much more detail (if those aren't the same thing).

@etchedpixels@mastodon.social @lexiconista@mastodon.ie "na also works more like !(expression) in C than a no." "No" and "not" are two entirely different things, even if they are both pronounced "no" in Spanish and other Latin languages

@etchedpixels@mastodon.social @lexiconista@mastodon.ie Chinese also repeats the verb for confirmation or negates the verb: Aren't you going? (disagree), go/ (agree), not go 你不去嗎? (對),(我)不去。 (不對), (我去)去。

@lexiconista@mastodon.ie Yes and no in Indo-European languages are actually a bit counter intuitive: Aren't you going to the store? No. This means "I'm not going," but most languages would give an answer of correct or incorrect to the statement, not a "no" to a negative question. This is incredibly confusing to non-native speakers
