@xxv@mastodon.social Perhaps, as in Carl Sagan‘s Contact, something important comes out of this — «The narrative begins with a series of flashbacks detailing the formative years of Dr. Eleanor “Ellie” Arroway. From a young age, she exhibits a profound curiosity about science and the cosmos, from learning to read as a toddler and repairing a radio as a young child to pursuing a lifelong fascination with the stars. Encouraged by her father, Theodore Arroway, she avidly pursues her intellectual interests.» (The quote is from a summary of the 1985 book, https://www[.]supersummary[.]com/contact-carl-sagan/summary/)

@benroyce@mastodon.social @too_little_caffeine@dotnet.social @jonesmurphy@mastodon.social @farlukar@mas.to @mkoek@mastodon.nl I read a good analogy recently — a political party in a democracy is like public transportation. The rail, metro and bus will bring you within walking distance, but they do not bring you precisely to your home. It does not make sense not to use public transportation because of this. It does not make sense not to vote because a party is not fully congruent with all of your positions. No political system can do that.

@cdarwin@c.im Thanks for highlighting this. Dogs have emerged as a reservoir for the parasite and this has complicated eradication efforts tremendously. If successful, dracunculiasis will be the third eradication of an infectious disease after smallpox and rinderpest. Challenges remain, scientists, doctors and anthropologists in industry, academia and NGOs, and international collaboration, will be needed for future successes. The link below points to a comprehensive list by Nature: https://www.nature.com/immersive/neglected-tropical-diseases/index.html

@randahl@mastodon.social Today, in Nature, link at the end. The article is open access. Therein: Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects. There is no excuse for being active on X with the single exception of attempting to actively fight disinformation. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-026-10098-2

@Lana@beige.party … and the more obvious the lie, the stronger the test for toxic allegiance. This also explains the continuous attack on established science, against the scientific consensus on climate change and vaccines.

@Weltbewohner @VQuaschning Den Unterschied weiß ich nicht. Zu Impressions steht auf LinkedIn: Every time your content appears on someone's feed, whether they interact with it or not, it counts as an impression. It's one of the key metrics to gauge the visibility of your posts and to understand how far your content has reached.
