okay. so. 1/?

I am aware that coding agents can be useful. But I see programming as an art form and not only a means to an end. And that gets diluted or even lost with agent usage. But well...

III don't know what to feel about this. Always thought the kernel might be one of the last bastions of incredibly high coding standards where one could hone their skills or so. But now I'm unsure how that will look like in the future... https://lore.kernel.org/linux-media/CAHk-=wi4zC+Ze8e+p3tMv8TtG_80KzsZ1syL9anBtmEh5Z40vg@mail.gmail.com/

Yaaay. I finally migrated away from amazon kindle. My kindle bought books are preserved without DRM now and the ereader has been jailbroken :D finally I never need to think about new generations of Amazonian DRM protections 🥰 I'm happy to have finally found motivation & time for that >.<

@drj@typo.social it's actually not that esoteric as the association with uxn could let you believe. It's smaller than BDF, straightforward to render and still supports character width. For constrained microcontroller projects - it's quite nice. Ofc it has huge limits as it's monochrome, has no ligatures nor dynamic width, only extended ASCII, ...

I had an error yesterday that happened randomly at least once every 6000th operation or so. So about every 15 minutes.

In other news I learned that I can put random sound files as an action on my breakpoints. Ofc it was a honk from untitled goose game

@lineplus i know most of the common tools like binwalk, imagej, ghidra (binaryninja), imhex, ... but I recently saw one specifically for kind of this use case from the homebrew community which was basically imagej, but you could manipulate your format, offsets and such live without needing to reload the file.

@lineplus hmmh. Maybe the entropy graph could be interesting again. But I once looked at them before. Specifically it's about this one: The Brother label printers have an update format that is easily breakable and so far I found their background images and such, but I'm sure that there must be some way to update fonts. They did that before. So I kinda assume that I just haven't found the location yet where they are put into. But each mono codepoint is only ~12x12px… https://github.com/tyalie/brother-pd3-modifier

I need your swarm intelligence: What do you guys use to find patterns / images in firmware blobs? I've been using ImageJ for a long time, but I found it quite painful to use when you know barely anything about the format.

edit: found it it was binxelview - mentioned in hacking washing machines talk :D

But I also might just not know enough about how to solderer tiny. I'm rly struggeling with rapid oxidization at 315°C for lead free solder. In turn heat transfer is a problem and I would generally love to get some knowledge on how to clean up and fix my solders at these dimensions. Instead of melting the solder I often only scraped over it and transformed it that way >.< In the end I managed, but this struggle can't be the be all end all of soldering at sub milli scale??

My biggest struggle here was actually finding a soldering tip that worked for me. As much as I was wowed by the pinecil devices I'm getting more and more frustrated with them as a person that almost always solders tiny stuff (0402 or smaller). I rly struggled transfering the heat into my joints. Using a weller with a similar tip worked fineish enough.

even though it is tiny to solder - it is actually rly straight forward nowadays. With the hwfly there isn't even a need for flying wire anymore. Additionally there are nice tutorials and firmware with sensible debug codes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFYM2PSzEqQ https://github.com/DefenderOfHyrule/usk

@devtal it's a Bayer filter CFA often seen on the camera sensor of color cameras. also see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bayer_filter fun fact: this layer is often the one responsible for making your camera not UV and IR sensitive. By removing it on your typical CMOS and CCD sensor one can make them quite sensitive to this frequency range. ^^
