I wrote up my COMPUTEX 2026 takeaways.
It was my first COMPUTEX, and I expected AI to be everywhere. I did not expect it to be almost everything.
I also found mini PCs, NAS hardware, KVMs, Noctua, Seasonic, and Open Source Taiwan.
My first COMPUTEX was overwhelming, mostly AI, and full of hardware I had a lot of questions about.
Here is what actually stood out to me.
I wanted to see how good local AI has actually gotten, so I built a mini AI cluster on my desk and tested it with a real coding workflow.
vLLM, OpenCode, NCCL, power monitoring, and open weight models.
Just a heads up if you are updating Proxmox to kernel 7.0.0-3-pve. Some LXCs might not be compatible with that kernel version. This is the first time I have run into this but figured I would mention it in case you are wondering why some of your LXC services might be crashing after that update. VMs of course are not affected because they are fully isolated.
To be clear you should update to the latest kernel, just be sure to check your LXCs afterwards.
I finally built a real 3-2-1 backup system for my homelab.
It ended up being way more than just “set up backups”:
offsite TrueNAS, a rebuild of the main NAS, and a third copy on a different platform for easier restores.
~30TB, no giant cloud bill, and a much better recovery story now.

Last night I had a dream that I traveled back in time to 2003. I couldn't figure out where I parked my DeLorean so I was stuck there.
The scariest thing about being in 2003 in my dream was that when I looked at my phone it said I was connected at 3G.
@Justin@social.younger.wtf it is. I thought the same thing but after checking the wires it was actually right (even though it didn’t seem to impact my network speed or PoE power).

Just ordered (5) 22TB Enterprise HDDs. They support 7200 RPM and 100% paycheck deletion.
This little NAS is kinda stacked. 5GbE, NVMe, quiet, low power, comes with NVMe drive and 12GB DDR.
When you can’t build anything new due to prices of RAM, Storage, and Processors, you go back to your HomeLab roots.
Self-hosting just keeps getting better! I finally took the time to set up PaperlessNGX. Local AI really took it to the next level with improved OCR.
