@paul_ipv6@infosec.exchange @inthehands@hachyderm.io Standard practice among tape lib operators where I've worked: Multiple copies of each file/object. Min 3 matching reads from recent tapes + older tapes to create a new copy. Tapes regularly refreshed w/ new (usually higher capacity) cartridges. Then along comes Orrible, "We are cancelling your tape orders. Move your data to our cloud where we'll keep one copy at much higher opex spend for you!" This is not called doing business. Rather, it's doing business to you.

@richlv@mastodon.social @eanakashima@hachyderm.io First rule of tree skiing (skiing through aspen groves or other timber): "Look and aim between the trees." Whether it's someone else pointing, or you pointing, pointing where to go indeed matters.

@haruki_zaemon Yes, as in a lighthouse, warning of reefs. Or the eye of Sauron, warning of doom.

@mattblaze@federate.social @me_valentijn@m.ai6yr.org @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org Back in June 2008, staff in a lab (next to lab where I had worked & across the back yard from my residence in the 80s) found a cracked vial. Some of the release ended up in a lab industrial sink that drained to public sewer when a staff member used it to wash their hands. This was a (thankfully very small) Pu spill to public sewer. Initial find: https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2008/06/low-level-plutonium-sample-involved-nist-boulder-lab-incident Public sewer: https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2008/06/nist-finds-radiation-contamination-lab-sink Much more: https://www.nist.gov/director/pao/information-updates-and-publications-relating-june-9-2008-plutonium-incident-nist

@mkoek@mastodon.nl @david_chisnall@infosec.exchange @GossiTheDog@cyberplace.social My favorite such incident (just before my time at the org) was a compromised login where the linux commands tried resulted in uppercase error responses, at which point the guy switched to DIR C: and other MS DOS commands before being detected and kicked off. The actual OS was UNICOS, running on a Cray. I heard the guy figured it out, and went down to Cray Research to dumpster-dive for docs in case there was a next time. ;-)
