I was recently observing a conversation between small startup founders who are buying €100k EGX Station AI workstations to move their developers from Cursor/Claude to local models. The same person seemed both to be questioning the value of all this LLM use by his dev team, at the same time considering buying €100k in hardware to reduce his LLM costs.

@tinker @raymaccarthy those numbers are strange though. I'd expect a doubling of queries to lead to more than just 15% increase in ad revenue.
Perhaps both are true? They saw a decline in ad revenue so they made the algorithm worse to increase the number of searches to increase ad impressions?
These days I use Metaget, Mojeek, and Qwant for search. I used to use Google exclusively, so they've lost my ad revenue.

In Q1 Google's reporting a 15.5% increase in ad revenue, and a DOUBLING of the number of search queries (thanks to a reduction in search accuracy?).

This is something that the fediverse could certainly use (and would be a good test-bed for the concept with its decentralized protocol), but personally I'm more interested in it for small email servers. De-centralizing control over RBLs.
I'm imagining something where your system automatically establishes trust with other moderators who moderate the same messages/accounts/servers the same way as you do.

Making it easier to hire remote workers in different countries would be great. Also making it easier to start a business sounds good on the surface.
However, I suspect these changes are being driven by VC lobbying, and I trust nothing those greedy vultures touch!
Usually "more friendly business environment" is code for "easier for the oligarchs to leech off society".
Don't follow the US example!

@catileptic excellent points, thank you. The struggle of good/bad tech companies is challenging.
It's risky to trust VC-backed or publicly traded companies, but even in that case if they are behaving ethically and open sourcing enough of their platform in a way that prevents future lock-in then even they _might_ be ok? Small isn't automatically good either.
People around me are confused because things that I once promoted, I'm now arguing against. Which makes them question my advice.

Also if you zoom into the last 10 years in the graph you can see that the growth is leveling off in 2024. So the data you're presenting is agreeing with the article so far as they overlap.

@waffelhard @jasoncoon @rasterweb I've replaced the battery in my electric toothbrush twice (Phillips Sonicare).
Since it has a NiMH battery I only put it on the charger when it warns me it's low on charge. I used to put it in the charger every day but I think the charger was overcharging the battery shortening its life. The most recent battery has to be at least 5 years old.

@vga256@mastodon.tomodori.net my wife just published a book as well. She used Draft2Digital and it's available for bookstores to order it. Barnes & Noble picked it up right away, adding it to their online catalog.
It won't appear on the shelf at bookstores, but at least this gives people options to buy it in print besides Amazon.
