@brewsterkahle@mastodon.archive.org Super good that this is continuing, but a little nuance: 1GW of data center is 1GW every hour of the year. 1GW(p) of solar in NL generates 0.12 GW on average, and most of that in summer. More south/sunny is better but never more than 0.5 GW. For wind, 1GW at sea is around 0.4GW power on average, in our area most of that in winter. On land, significantly less, more like 0.25GW average. Solar and wind require significant spare capacity, transport and storage.

@mboelen@mastodon.nl leverancier van de panelen vroeg of ik er niet meteen een batterij bij wilde. Maar dan zou ik de batterij gaan opladen als anderen ook veel stroom nodig hebben…. En zelfs zonder batterij gebruik ik 47% van de jaarproduktie zelf. Toegegeven, die produktie is naar schatting slechts 500 kWh/kWp/jaar

@tangledwing for emergencies here the government advises to keep water, canned foodstuff and a wind-up FM radio. You may have mobile phone networks that are better equipped, but ours go down 2-4 hours into a power failure. Luckily we don’t have those frequently.
EV’s promise something too. Although with frozen batteries they also won’t be happy to deliver large power.

In NL we call “UK”, “VK” and “USA”, “VS”. Our own country we call “Nederland” but others call it “Holland” or “Pays Bas” or “Niederlande”. In many places Beijing used to be called Peking. Eswatini used to be called Swaziland until they changed it. It is true that I would frown a bit if NL beaches would suddenly be flooded by the Danish Gulf.

Nobody claims to “own” the seat in the theater when they buy the ticket. It is just what one is used to. For physical books we are used to “own” the paper and the ink, and even being able to give them to someone else to read. It takes time before we’re used to a new system, but that does not necessarily mean the new is unreasonable

Intellectual property rights are meant to enable people to make a living from their mental work. Not use, but only abuse of those rights is bad. The solution is clarity about what someone is buying. Many books I bought I only read once. I have never been able to give a movie theater ticket to a friend after the show.
