Everyone is using computers since they existed. People really don't talk about ie 'Digital Civil Engineering'. But maybe a "Computer Archaeology" – as a branch of Industrial Archaeology – is emerging. Born by a mix of necessity (maintain old scarce documented framework) and passion about a material electronic past that few people understand or care about. Retrocomputing started as a hobby, but soon will be a scientific field by itself.

We can argue that writing something like: print "$name", is also 'anthropomorphizing language'. We get annoyed. Pioneers that communicated with machines using physical switches and machine code also did, after witness kids using BASIC and keyboards. The best advice to interact with LLM I read: Talk like a caveman😄 : "do this", "add that", etc.. Save tokens, energy and time.

I'm not claiming - in the present economic context - they can travel much either. I'm only noticing a pattern, observed interacting with people in 20-40s, reading social posts, etc. Make sense when you're bombard with videos of beautiful places and happy young people traveling in exotic places. "You need to visit Dubai yo'all".😉

Most part claim to be "social and climate change aware" but, at the same time, think is totally normal to take a 'cheap' Ryanair flight 1 or ,2 times per month, to visit European capitals! An intellectual version of visiting Disney-world, that promotes pollution, gentrification and housing problems.

Like it or not we have to recognize that the Catholic Church - today - is miles away from Evangelic scientific obscurantism. You have Vatican theologians with Phd in Astronomy that don't put aside the idea of Big-Bang and a Universe harboring many intelligent life forms. A little different from tv preachers that say dinosaurs fossils were inserted in rocks by the devil to foul humanity.

@blogdiva@mastodon.social The Catholic Church, since the 18th century, is much pro Science. Jesuits, like the former Pope Francis, believe that science and rationality are important for Humanity. The Vatican conciliates modern theories of Physics/Biology with the Scriptures. Is very difficult to find a young priest that don't believe in dinosaurs and I never meet a catholic craving for a nuclear war to be raptured!

We are flooded with posts from IT experts criticizing LLMs. These texts do a poor job because:

* Don’t clarify what LLMs are or how they work.

* Don’t explain that it’s possible to use ethically sourced data to train them.

* They frequently propose banning the technology instead of regulating its use.

Perhaps it would be better to teach the average user how to properly use these tools and how install them on their machines, giving them a true autonomy.

@janvlug @lproven Something along those lines👍 We are not in 1999 anymore. If our smartphones are now so powerful as laptop computers why we still use them with training wheels OS versions? I want a smartphone with a full Linux OS and modular electronics that make possible to easily upgrade/repair it. I'm no computer/electronic expert, only tired of greedy people and waste of resources and pretty sure I'm not alone.

@Strandjunker I get the point, USA is really far way from those countries. Unfortunately reality is a little bit more complicated. You can actually go bankrupt in countries with NHS . Specially if you have an emergency and face long surgical waiting lists or a rare condition that require treatments not covered by the system.

@mrundkvist Contract archaeology is not a monolith. Some jobs require that you coordinate 30 persons inside a construction yard, with lots of regulations involved.Other jobs have much small crews (1-3).You can also work solo (ie infrastructure installation). Companies sometimes contract specialists to produce historical research, artifacts reports, etc. Why don't you try the last two options? Ideally a company willing to put you in field supporting a more experienced person, giving you know how.

@mrundkvist I assume what you recurrently call 'highway projects' is in fact 'Rescue Archaeology'. So what's the problem? Bad salary? Bad working conditions? To much physically demanding?

@mrundkvist Old artifact photo trick (pre-Photoshop). Place your lithics over a white opaque plastic sheet with bright light(s) under. That will create an amazing background that feels like a digital edited picture.

Everyone was watching it, nobody admitted it. ;-D I wonder what's the environmental footprint of hours of "googling"/navigate webpages - without success - , about an obscure topic, versus input few words in a LLM engine to get a good result after some seconds.
