Just cancelled a prescription subscription from one of those American men's "health" companies that advertise everywhere. One of the ones that blurs the line between a medical practice and a phone app for ordering hair loss and erection pills.

After finding my subscription's cancel button and clicking it, I had to confirm it FIVE TIMES ON DIFFERENT PAGES.

Cue the drip campaign of SMS messages asking me to reconsider. 🤦

@cstross@wandering.shop I hate that the term has been fully captured, because early EA coverage was how I found Givewell and similar orgs. Notably their top charities are all still about Malaria, and not AI safety.

Bongino on the difference between being a successful podcaster and holding government office: "I’m not paid for my opinions anymore. I work for the taxpayer. I’m paid on evidence."

Unusually self-aware for anyone in the current US administration, and also a great summary of the problem with an engagement-driven media environment. I'm reframing this as people being paid for the magnitude of their opinions, not the quality.

@cstross@wandering.shop If it's something people say aloud a lot, the emphasis on the second syllable stops it from rolling off the tongue. This would only bother me if street punks were throwing it around in casual conversation. If its usage is formal in-world, then its sound is moot.

I usually support malaria treatment, cash transfers, carbon removal, and Wikipedia; but I'm becoming worried about politics and big tech.

(I know TESCREAL is a whole nasty thing. But without trying to bring machine gods, what's the highest impact thing I can do to unfuck the world a bit?)
