With the start of the new academic year coinciding with family matters, the start of the 2026 academic year has been rather tough. Now that things at home have settled down for the time being, I’ve picked up my #5-year diary, which has been blank for nearly three weeks. I’m in the mood to write with a soft nib.

Yesterday at the bookshop, I found Kaori Nashiki's new book, “Illustrated Guide to Wildflowers（translated title, unofficially)”, and bought it with a joy. The binding allows the pages to open perfectly flat, and I was impressed by the careful construction of the book. I learnt the term ‘Spring ephemeral’ for the first time. With a seasonal plum-blossom pen.

I'm leisurely reading "Hige no gahaku no gohan-chol" by Umi Umemura (painter Akira Yamaguchi's wife) at a pace of about one chapter per day. My family member, who said they liked Akira Yamaguchi's works but found the Suzushiro Diary too detailed to read, also enjoyed it.

On the final day of the long weekend, I read through the books I'd bought at the end of the year, writing reading notes and making excerpts (from "So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away" by Richard Brautigan).
I came across the Green 32, so it became the first fountain pen I bought in 2026.

At last, I'm managing to tackle my diary and daily tasks. Perhaps late November always brings more off days for me, as last year too, my 5 Year Diary remained blank around this time. That said, I did manage to tick off ‘ pre-ordering the Beni Madonna (special type of satsuma) ’ that I’d jotted down at the start of November. Well done, last year’s me.

My family bought astringent persimmons to practise drying them on our persimmon tree at home. I think it's rather nice to eat them at one's preferred firmness, though it's a bit of a pain when you get one with lots of seeds.
