At my last job, we had a Slack channel where many of us said "Good morning" every morning. I'm sure many people felt it was quaint or unnecessary, and many did not participate. But many of us did, and it was a small moment of joy. We'd leave emojis. Working remotely, we didn't see each other face to face, almost ever. Sure, we sat on Zoom meetings (way too often), and we communicated all throughout the day, but literal in-person interactions were rare. I went to the office about once a year.

But I really liked the simplicity of: it: $1 = test case description $? = previous exit code Because then you can just run anything after it inside $(here) and you don't have to do it "our way". I guess that's the trade off with an API... make it flexible or make it specific. There are downsides to both. I should probably take some cues from Jest and Pest and just go with the specific "locked" argument order.

Since any good testing framework should probably have assertions, I've created an expect_to_be function which compares numbers, strings, arrays, and dictionaries.

it "should compare two words" $(expect_to_be yes no)

(The above example would fail because yes and no are not the same.)

I get like... window tiling and keyboard shortcuts... but if Gnome Terminal can run my shell and does just fine, I don't really feel like I need much else _from a terminal emulator_.

What's the best terminal emulator on Debian, and why? I'm struggling to find a really good reason to use anything other than Gnome Terminal. I've been on iTerm2 for the last decade (on MacOS), so I'm looking for something maybe in that realm. The popular Debian alternatives seem cool, but also not really anything that I need. Like give me a strong reason not to just use Gnome Terminal.

I think what mainly pushed me away for years was probably the "def" keyword. It that was replaced with the word "function", I probably would have chosen to learn the language a lot sooner, but "def" always made me roll my eyes for some reason. Cool language, though, so far. I misjudged it.

So I'm learning Rust and Python. Really enjoying both so far, but of course Rust has a bit of a higher learning curve (which I think is totally worth it for all the benefits that it provides). I'm taking my time with Rust, and I certainly don't expect to learn it in a day, or a weekend. But wow, Python? I feel like I already know it, and I've barely gotten started.

And I've course I've always heard that about Python. "It's so simple and easy." It's obviously a super popular programming language, and everyone writes it; I've just never had a need to reach for it when another language would do just fine. Why bother? Recently I was laid off after working 6 years at the NBA, so I have a little downtime. There you go, perfect reason to learn some news skills.

I've been writing PHP, TypeScript, and Bash for years, along with HTML and CSS. My software engineering journey began in 2009 by making things for the web. Since then I have come to enjoy making all kinds of software. Until now, those languages have gotten me very far. You can really do a lot with a little. I've written a little C#, Rust, and Ruby over the years, but never really dove in too deep with those languages. Today I start learning Python, and was delighted to find how easy it is.
