Dad, Husband, Coder, Petrolhead

My young lad (he's 14) is fund-raising for the British Heart Foundation by riding the London to Brighton bike ride on 21st June, 2026, not on a fancy carbon fibre race bike, but on a mountain bike he rides to school! The total journey is 54 miles!

I like writing code, solving problems, using TDD to make progress etc... if I wanted to do away with all that, I'd become a manger.. which I have always avoided throughout my career for the sole reason I like "getting my hands dirty"

@jclermont@phpc.social This broke Pulse for me. Specifying the classes fixes the issue.. but you have to find out what they are to begin with (there was a github issue with info saving me that hassle thankfully).. although should be less of an issue with your own code, but 3rd-party packages can clearly be problematic.

@skye@indieweb.social Not sure that sounds like too bad an idea tbh. Although I've been using PHP since 4.0.1.. sometimes I feel like an escape into something else would be good.. certain frameworks (also my bread n butter) haven't helped recently and figured if I needed to dive into another one, go the whole hog and deviate to another language entirely. I'm not a Go expert but enjoy the language (had fun with a Wails app recently too).. maybe I'm just old now and suffering from burnout atm 😆

@skye@indieweb.social Not sure it's just PHP. When I tried Zed for a bit.. I paid for phptools as it seemed comprehensive. It worked, there were some quirks, but was OK. Wasn't for me as I realised I actually rely on an IDE rather than an editor. However, even with VueJS.. I struggled with the 'go to definition/declaration' feature etc (mostly, it just didn't) so I gave up. Rock and a hard place atm. I hate JB products right now, but at the same time, unfortunately, not many decent alternatives.

@heiglandreas@phpc.social Thanks mate. I haven't tried, but that could be a good call. I run a Minio instance, so I could probably either use an 'aws' action or the likes to copy the output there via the CLI tool. Will have a ponder/test later and if all goes well, maybe write it up with config examples for future me/others 👍🏻

Does anyone know if it's possible to create viewable (HTML) artifacts of PHPUnit/Xdebug code coverage HTML output for Forgejo/Codeberg? I was previously using Codecov, which works fine, but I'm migrating things from Github (seems Codecov only supports a few major git providers without at least a bunch of hassle) so looking for an alternative, more "owned" solution. Wondered if anyone else had done something similar?

One plus while chasing a new gig.. it's given me time to finally work on updating my OSS package for HIBP. Replacing some straggling "internal" arrays with more type-defined objects (most were already done) and to go through the codebase and update things to fix the generics errors thrown by PHPStan (mostly for a 3rd-party dependency). Making PHP 8.4 the min version also allows for some code updates in general (package is now 8 years old).

@afilina@phpc.social In $previousJob, the junior on the team was leaning heavily on AI. Sometimes, this made significant changes to certain Eloquent queries (Laravel codebase) that changed nothing in way of functionality, but went from a single chained method to more than half a dozen. The cognitive load trying to do code reviews on that is 100% wasteful. Like life, everything is a compromise. Quicker code output is slowing reviews at best, worse, contributes to needless burnout.

On a plus note... the kids (and my better half.. she works as a Teaching Assistant) have just broken up for the school holidays, so I'll get some more time to spend with them while I brush off the CV 🙂 Clare always tells me; things happen for a reason...........

Well that's a shit Friday.. apparently the product team I was the Principal Engineer for, no longer has a requirement for such position (mid-level and AI is apparently enough).. so after just shy of 2 years, I join the ever increasing ticker of recent tech-related redundancies.

Thought I'd move forward to PhpStorm 2026.2 EAP. I know it's an EAP, but the first file that loads in the project, is a test file from yesterday.. and now there's no ability to run the test with the usual keyboard shortcut and the gutter run icons etc have disappeared.. how does a regression like that even get in there? (not the first time this has happened over the product lifetime).

Seriously.. #Jetbrains is becoming a really fucked up company with a massive slop cannon.

Time to find better

My youngest Charlie (14) has signed up to do the London to Brighton ride this year, 54 miles, on the MTB that he uses for school!

If anyone fancies making a donation to help him hit his £350 target, we'd both be very grateful. All proceeds go to the British Heart Foundation which has supported my father-in-law for many years as his heart only works at ~18%.

I did this ride in 2017 on a 6kg road bike, a 12kg MTB is going to be a challenge but one he's keen to conquer!

Dad, Husband, Coder, Petrolhead My young lad (he's 14) is fund-raising for the British Heart Foundation by riding the London to Brighton bike ride on 21st June, 2026, not on a fancy carbon fibre race bike, but on a mountain bike he rides to school! The total journey is 54 miles! Another cruise out with Clare.. this time half the 13 mile trip was along the side of the canal. Never been down there before, a great pathway.

Never wore one as a kid (they weren't a thing).. I see soooo many people without them.. assuming they all think "it won't happen to me"... yet when it does... you'll be grateful!

Grazed knee.. grazed and bruised elbow... stiff neck... would also have had a rather scuffed up face/head (felt the impact on the ground for sure!)

Might need some work on/a new derailleur (it hit the deck pretty hard)... but picked up my bose pods, grabbed the bike and rode off... could have been plenty worse!

Just when you think things have got slightly better and stress starts to drop...... you get questioned as to why keeping release notes/changelog should be done (apparently it adds too much additional work 🤯 ) rather than just getting the rest of the team to essentially use a crystal ball to see what's changed.. they should just dig into the code to check 🤦🏻‍♂️

Awesome mini ride out with my better half on Sunday as part of a '10 hours of riding in May' Strava challenge... driven down this road many times but not ridden it for years (and it would have been a "fly past" on my Cube Litening rather than a cruise).. never noticed the lake here (between Denham and Harefield).. stopped and grabbed a quick snap.

As much as I'm a petrolhead... I love riding this bike!

@alextheuxguy@fosstodon.org I remember doing these when I was a kid on my Speccy 48k.. not only from magazines, but my ol' man also used to record spoken code on a radio show too (can't remember what station/show it was as I was only ~8 or 9)... good times! 😃🤓

Went for a 'Golden Hour' photo shoot evening with my youngest last week at Battersea Powerstation. Awesome views and were blessed with a sweet sunset.

This image snapped with my phone quickly. Need to pull the inages from my actual camera and go through the 300 or so taken to weed out the crap.

@outofcontrol Don't think I've ever binned a HDD (rightly or wrongly). Have these sitting next to me.. most IDE connectors. There's at least 3 there with win95 and win2k on them 😃 And yup, next to them is also a bunch kf 3.5" floppies, half blank and half with old SAM Coupé games on them. I bought 2x Seagate EXOS 16TB HDDs in November last year for £200.56 each. They're now £549! Insane 🤯

@afilina@phpc.social I should add, the service classes are not part of Laravel. Their RESTful method names are OK in the controllers as it's very much standard practice there, but the naming of the service etc classes were chosen by a bunch of $previousEmployees

@afilina@phpc.social $workProject is a Laravel base that uses DI'd service classes... architecture is OK.. however.. Laravel's default RESTful (preferred) controllers contain the methods 'index', 'show', 'destroy', 'update' etc... now there's MANY controllers like this.. and yet, some bright-spark decided to call all of the service classes the same name as the method they're injected into, so there's LOADS of 'Index.php', 'Destroy.php' etc classes/files. Same for requests, 'IndexRequest' etc 😭

@irreverentmike@hachyderm.io I used it at previous $DAYJOB and also use it solo for my own stuff (mostly for local vs CI vs prod configs). The part I liked was that you can take a base (say 'dev') and then add a personal config that inherits that that you can then easily override entries with (ports might not always be compatible with all devs, so easily tweaked) but then also sharable across your own devices (I use a desktop and laptop for example). There's a free tier (no card needed), so worth testing.
