@ian@mastodon.radio We have just returned from a long weekend in Germany with family, and although I booked a Fiesta (or equivalent) hire car from Hertz, they offered me a BYD Otto 3 electric car with no additional charge. We took it, and I have to say I was quite impressed. The range is nearly 500km, so depending on your usage, you wouldn't need to charge on a regular basis at home. As long as there is a charging network in your area, you could get away with using that. The car itself was quiet, and had more performance than we needed. If I had to be critical, the one thing I think they can improve is the steering - it felt a bit vague and compared to my Rav 4, it's not so direct. The other comment - when I was driving back to the airport, the range was dropping much quicker than the indicator reported. I know I was driving quickly, but it knows the spot and average load and could have been more accurate. It wasn't an issue as I had ensured we had sufficient for the return trip to the airport. So, all in all I am glad I had the experience, but for me a hybrid is still the better option, particularly when I consider pulling our little Eriba caravan.
