Dr. Richardson’s Letter this morning is a painful read covering the gutless cesspool of cowardice and capitulation that is the GOP. Sickening cowards. Two more rare birds reported at the Nature Center, both out of seasonal range, both made the rare bird email list. Osprey - Pandion haliaetus: A large fishing raptor that normally migrates through in spring and fall. Not significantly out of range, but early. Brown Creeper - Certhia americana: A small tree creeper that is one of our winter birds. This is so far out of range, I had to check the sighting to make sure the person was well known and reliable. An American Bittern was sited out at the Nature Canter, which came across the rare bird email listing. These are reclusive, cryptic herons that should not be here this time of year. We seen them (rarely) during spring migration, but not during summer. Story of a hawk. This was several years ago, but still warm in my heart. Noticed a pair of Red-shouldered Hawks building a nest directly above one of the major trails at the Nature Center (about 10 meters up). Both took turns sitting on the nest to incubate, through even the worst storms. This is the chick that hatched. The chance to watch this chick grow and fledge was a thrill.

The description on All About Birds is perfect ... "a Red-shouldered Hawk is typically a sign of tall woods and water."

Grateful that yesterday was TACO Tuesday. Angry that so many have died in an illegal war for the ego of a worthless 💩 maniac. The photo below is my current (and likely future) mood toward any Republican.

Yesterday was my last voluntary work day for a while. A car accident in 1973 that crushed left side of my body has finally caught up, so time replace the right knee (and perhaps the left). Can't gut through the daily grinding pain any longer so it's time (10 years ago as my wife would say).

Red-shouldered Hawk searching for a nesting site, letting people below know it is not happy. These are quite common around the Nature Center with multiple nesting sites.

Just a thought after all the vitriol

Every day should be LGBTQIA+ awareness and support day- valuable and vulnerable community trying to live their lives and contribute to their communities. They threaten no one, and should be allowed to live and love as they are, no judgement, no harassment, no forced (false) conversion therapies.

Every conservative religious zealot attacking this community needs to look at themselves in the mirror, slap themselves, hard, and ask — Is this this what my faith is about? - Hate? Faith is about Love and acceptance. Wake up.

Bald Eagles are a fairly common sighting in and around the Nature Center, but always a thrill. There are three nesting pairs in the vicinity, so visitors will see adults, fledglings and every molt state as the young birds mature. Members of the Order Accipitriformes - the largest Order of diurnal raptors - Bald Eagles fall in the Accipitridae Family with Hawks and Kites (and other Eagles).

Wonderful to see the interactions between the breeding pairs, and between adults and their fledgling as they train. The fledglings can be a bit clumsy, so it is not unheard of for one to "crash land" in a tree nearby during a hike.

Working on photos yesterday, and remembered a shot from 20 years ago with a digital camera of the time (Olympus C-8080). Loved that camera - shot jpg (3264x2448 pixels). Decided to see what I could do with a photo taken at Swiftcurrent Lake (2006). Fun time wit the photo, and wonderful memories of the family trip.

Back to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for the Pygmy Nuthatch - the last Nuthatch I have any images of. These are tiny birds (~10cm long) that forage in ponderosa pine forests. Their occurrence is spotty, limited primarily to higher elevations in the western US.
Their call is unique, rather much like a squeaky toy.
